Le Concerto pour piano date de 1979. Voilà une œuvre plus moqueuse et irrévérentieuse qu’étrange à une époque dominée encore par l’avant-garde. Il s’agit, en vérité, d’un hommage à Chostakovitch – peut-être aussi à l’âpre musique de Nielsen - qui prend toute sa force dans le second mouvement. L’épure du langage et l’esprit du concerto grosso teinté de swing prête à rire. C’est tellement bien fait ! Le cœur de la partition demeure toutefois le troisième mouvement, lent, aux ombres crépusculaires, presque bartokiennes et qui, parfois, évoquent les cris étouffés des 13e et 14e symphonies de Chostakovitch. La finale pourrait être cette réminiscence des 77 mesures conclusives de la Sonate dite "funèbre" de Chopin. Son caractère inexorable est admirablement projeté par l’orchestre de Katowice sous la baguette d’Antoni Wit qui créa la partition en 1992. La Symphonie n° 6 de Meyer fut composée à l’époque de la déclaration de la loi martiale en Pologne, en décembre 1981. Le premier enregistrement de cette partition puissante dresse un parallèle – consient ou non de la part du compositeur – avec la révolte sous-jacente d’un peuple. D’une remarquable force expressive, le lamento apparait comme une page narrative, simulant le début de la répression. Comment ne pas songer à la Symphonie n° 7 "Leningrad" de Chostakovitch ? Le caractère à la fois percussif et scintillant (remarquable prise de son) du second mouvement se déploie avec virtuosité, notamment dans la petite harmonie. Meyer caractérise les atmosphères de manière presque visuelle ! Un chant médiéval anime la partie lente de la partition. Magnifique orchestration avant un finale sarcastique aux cuivres ! On comprend que l’œuvre ait été créée en Allemagne, le message de la symphonie étant, alors, irrecevable par le régime polonais d’alors. Une splendide symphonie. (Jean Dandrésy)

This album presents recordings of two important works by a Polish composer – Krzysztof Meyer (b. 1943), an artist born during World War II. It is therefore no coincidence that one of the compositions, Symphony No. 6, Op. 57, also called the Polish Symphony, was created in 1982, at a difficult time of martial law in Poland, which put an end to the liberation movements of Solidarity. Although the piece is not programmatic in the formal sense of the word, the composer quotes motifs of Polish songs therein, thus symbolically referring to the issue of the loss of freedom. The second of the compositions is the Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, Op. 46, a piece of a completely different nature, on which Meyer worked in 1979–1989, not content with the initial version. We will find here a varied texture, an impressive display of piano virtuosity, influences of various music genres (including jazz), a playful take on form, and sonic experiments. Listening to both compositions and discovering different facets of the composer’s creative talent will undoubtedly be an interesting experience. The piano part is performed by Pavel Gililov, an Austrian-based pianist of Russian origin, the first performer of Meyer’s Piano Concerto. He is accompanied by the Great Symphony Orchestra of Polish Radio and Television in Katowice.
