Davide Rebuffa, luth baroque

Hormis un choix d’œuvres du compositeur Giuseppe Antonio Brescianello, le véritable héros de ce disque est le galichon ou mandore, variante du luth au timbre assez proche de la guitare classique (Le musée de la Philharmonique de Paris en conserve un magnifique dans ses collections). Le guitariste Davide Rebuffa joue ici sur un galichon signé du viennois Gregori Wenger (Ausburg, 1746) avec des cordes en boyau et un diapason de de 392 hz dit « romain » mais propre au baroque français. Né à Bologne, Brescianello fut un violoniste réputé en son temps attaché à la cour de Wuttenberg à Stuttgart où il officiait en tant qu’Oberkapellmeister jusqu’à son décès dans cette même ville en 1757. Il composa plutôt de la musique instrumentale (Sonates, Concerts et Symphonies) et ces dix-huit pièces pour galichon dont un unique Prélude (!). Ces « partite et sinfonie oer gallichone solo » sont en fait des Suites en cinq mouvements contrastés et comprenant menuets et gigues. Le timbre du galichon est effectivement un panachage de piqué-pincé, alliage ravissant du luth et de la guitare. Savant mélange de rectitude et d’onctuosité, le jeu du guitariste porte allègrement les partitions de ce compositeur habile dans l’art de surprendre l’auditeur. Une révélation (Jérôme Angouillant)

Among the entertainments with which the Bavarian nobles of the 18th century occupied their monotonous and idle daily life, in addition to gambling, tobacco smoking and reading, the mandora and calichon are often mentioned. The latter were lutes, with only 6- (or even 5-) courses of strings, which – being much less demanding than the contemporary German 13-course lute – became among the favourite instruments of the German, Austrian and Bohemian aristocracy, including women, who were generally excluded from professional instrumental music. The larger 8-course calichon, due to its versatility was widely used as a continuo-playing instrument in chamber ensembles and orchestras, especially in monasteries and among the clergy. It is precisely an original gallichone of 1754 the instrument used by the specialist Davide Rebuffa for the performance of the pieces attributed to Giuseppe Antonio Brescianello, probably composed in Stuttgart after 1737 for a member of the family of the Dukes of Württemberg, at the service of which he spent much of his existence.
