 De la pléiade des compositeurs polonais de la fin du XVIIIe siècle à nos jours la label Acte Préalable invite depuis de nombreuses années à découvrir des œuvres et des interprètes de qualité. Le présent enregistrement ne déroge pas. Feliks Roderyk Labunski (1892-1979), né près de Lublin dans la partie polonaise faisant à l’époque partie de l’empire Russe était un enfant précocement doué pour la musique. Il fit toutefois sans surprise des études d’architecture à Moscou et ce n’est qu’à l’âge de vingt-neuf ans, bien après la révolution bolchevique qu’il entreprit de sérieuses études musicales. Celles-ci le menèrent à Paris dans l’entourage de Georges Migot, Nadia Boulanger, et Paul Dukas avant qu’il ne s’établisse aux USA en 1936 où il continua de composer et de professer, notamment à Cincinatti. Dans un langage post-impressionniste affirmé, les œuvres enregistrées ici avec grand talent par Slawomir Dobrzanski (1968-), témoignent d’un réel et profond sentiment d’attachement à la Pologne natale (Kujawiaki, Mazurek et Noëls polonais), souvent teinté à partir de 1942 (Threnody) puis 1949 (Four Miniatures) d’audaces harmoniques et rythmiques proches de celles de Milhaud, Bartok voire Prokofiev. Les contrastes dramatiques de sa seconde Sonate (1957), ainsi que son langage harmonique en témoignent. L’ajout des Noëls polonais (1964) interprétés à l’orgue avec tact par David Pickering complète ce très intelligent et réussi survol d’une œuvre dont, hélas, la plupart des compositions demeurent à l’état de manuscrits égarés dans telle ou telle bibliothèque ou collection d’universités ou de dédicataires. (Jacques-Philippe Saint-Gerand) Polish-American composer Feliks Roderyk Labunski was born in Ksawerynów in the Lublin region of today’s Poland, which at the time was part of the Russian Empire. The composer’s father was a railway engineer, the future director of the Putilov factory in St. Petersburg. Feliks spent his early childhood in Moscow and began learning to play the piano there, first with his mother and then with an unknown teacher named Roch Hill. The piano was an important instrument for Felix. As a child. he often played duets with his younger brother Wiktor (1895–1974) who, after studying at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, would go on to become a valued virtuoso, teacher, and long-term director of the Kansas City Conservatory. Feliks initially devoted himself to studying architecture at the Polytechnic Institute in St. Petersburg (1911–1915), from where he was sent to the war front in the Engineering Corps of the Russian army. Demobilized in March 1918, he arrived in independent Poland only in 1921. We don’t have any information about his whereabouts between 1918 and 1921, As a result of the Bolshevik Revolution, the Labunski family lost almost all their material assets and the accompanying high social status. Meanwhile, Feliks, at the mature age of twenty nine, decided to begin professional music studies....
