L'opera buffa napolitaine était d'abord destinée à servir d'intermède pour divertir les spectateurs d'un opéra "sérieux", mais les plus célèbres vécurent leur propre vie, comme celle qui, jouée à Paris en 1752, 19 ans après sa création napolitaine, y déclencha une fameuse querelle comme notre pays en a le secret, la "Querelle des Bouffons". Il s'agit bien sûr de "La Serva Padrona", la Servante Maîtresse, un des chefs d'œuvre de Giovanni Battista Draghi, dit Pergolese (1710-1736), ce grand maître mort si jeune de tuberculose. Dans cet album, les talents de comédienne de la soprano Amanda Forsythe portent admirablement cette comédie en "parlé-chanté" à mi-chemin entre Goldoni et la Commedia dell'arte. Outre quelques agréables morceaux instrumentaux, cet album est complété par "Livietta e Tracollo", une œuvre moins connue mais tout aussi divertissante de Pergolese, dans laquelle l'héroïne se met à parler français : Le mélange des langues est un des charmes de l'opéra-bouffe. Dans la même veine, un court fragment d'un des 60 opéras d'un des créateurs du genre, Leonardo Leo (1694-1744) : "Onore vince amor" (l'honneur vainqueur de l'amour, 1736). Ces derniers morceaux sont allègrement et talentueusement portés par la soprano Carlotta Colomba, le baryton Jesse Blumberg, et la basse Christian Immler, accompagnés par des instrumentistes prestigieux. Une belle et divertissante anthologie de l'opera buffa napolitaine, telle qu'on l'aimait au début du XVIIIème siècle. (Marc Galand)

Early opera took a peculiar turn in the 17th century. Bowing to the demands of paying customers, more and more superfluous comical elements were layered upon the fates of great heroic characters. At some point there was a backlash, and the opera seria, where only noble figures are found, came into being. Episodes of slapstick were set apart from the opera and played in front of the curtain between acts to entertain the audience. The two most renowned of these intermezzos, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi's Serva padrona and Livietta e Tracollo, were recorded by the Boston Early Music Festival in Bremen last autumn after several live performances. These two capriccios were real "hits" during the composer's (very short) lifetime and still keep their Neapolitan charm and wit even today. Two irresistible stories are featured – a maid who uses clever sophistication to conquer the heart of her master and the turbulent "robber story" of a cunning peasant girl who puts a villain on the right path to marriage.
