Ces lieder du compositeur croate Blagoje Bersa, très peu connu en France comme l’est d’ailleurs l’école croate de la période romantique puis contemporaine, constituent une belle révélation. Bersa a étudié le piano à Zagreb auprès du prolixe compositeur Ivan Zajc puis, au conservatoire de Vienne, la composition avec Julius Epstein et la composition avec Robert Fuchs (qui a aussi eu comme élève Mahler et Sibelius). Bersa appartient au modernisme musical croate qui s’étend de 1890 à 1920 mais son œuvre pour voix et piano ici enregistrée pour la première fois est profondément emprunte de romantisme allemand comme le prouve le choix des poésies signées Heine, Herder, Müller, Siebel et Goethe qui constituent le premier CD. Le second est consacré aux poètes croates Josip Bersa et Petar Preradovic eux aussi chantés en allemand. La ligne mélodique fait souvent songer à Schubert par sa délicatesse. Elle est portée par la voix ample et profonde du baryton-basse Kresimir Strazanac et la belle interprétation du pianiste Kresimir Starcevic, deux artistes dont on loue la finesse des nuances. Blagoje Bersa belonged to Croatian Musical Modernism, which lasted from about 1890 to 1920, enriching the musical heritage with new nuances in harmony and sound colour. He composed orchestral, choral, chamber and piano works, as well as operas, melo-monodramas and songs. Marija Kuntaric wrote: “??n the songs we meet Bersa as a pronounced Romantic, whose language had been formed by the various currents of this style in music. First of all, this was the cantabile ??talian melody, then the various masters of German Romanticism (Wagner, Mahler, R. Strauss) and the relaxed music of Vienna, and in later works the simplicity of folk art. The softness of the melodic line of Bersa's solo songs sometimes recalls Schubert, under the influence of whom several pages of dramatic excitement were also created. Over the course of time Bersa's melody became increasingly original and simple, and in essence he remained a romantic, the main feature of whom was the beauty of the lyric.”
