Ingres avait son violon, mais c’est en peinture qu’il s’illustra. Paganini avait la mandoline et la guitare pour premières amours, mais c’est avec le violon que son nom entra dans la légende : virtuose diabolique et sulfureux. Les six Sonates pour violon et guitare de l’op. 3 (en deux mouvements) sont encadrées dans cet enregistrement par un fougueux Moto perpetuo op. 11 dont la nature motorique fait subir des supplices à la justesse et à l’intonation du violoniste, et par la Grande Sonata M.S. 3, qui renverse les rôles puisqu’elle est destinée à la guitare avec accompagnement de violon, comme certaines sonates de Mozart. S’y adjoint le Cantabile op. 17. On ne recherchera pas de profondeur métaphysique dans ces œuvres, mais on sera charmé par l’inventivité mélodique de ces petites pièces qui portent témoignage de l’affection profonde que Paganini portait à ces instruments. Bien sûr, on n’omettra pas de noter en elles certains tours typiques de la virtuosité paganinienne : pizzicati de la main gauche, coups d’archet jetés, ricochets ou spiccati, mais rien qui justifie le refus par l’église de l’inhumation de Paganini au motif de son diabolisme ! Apprécions donc ici des interprètes valeureux qui rendent pleinement justice pour notre plus grand plaisir à ces pièces quelque peu oubliées et rarement enregistrées. (Jacques-Philippe Saint-Gerand)

From the brilliant and impetuous personality of one of the most emblematic musicians of history, Roberto Noferini [former performer of the world premiere recording of the 24 capricci on historical violin: Tactus tc.781690] on violin, and Donato D'Antonio on guitar, here present a chamber music program that highlights all the passion that bound Paganini to these two instruments. The composer's skill in using the technical and expressive characteristics of the violin and guitar gives space for great virtuosities that reach the physical limits of the instrument and the performer, without ever betraying that operatic and theatrical feeling that will become increasingly dominant with the inexorable rise of melodrama and "belcanto".
