Radio de Munich, début des années soixante, Rafael Kubelik reprend la tradition Haendélienne qu’Eugen Jochum avait revivifiée au début des années cinquante. Orchestre gris trottoir, coupures sensibles, distributions mitigées, version allemandes (pour "Judas Maccabeus" la belle proposition de Chrysander l’excuse évidemment, plus guère pour Xerxès auquel l’italien originel était déjà rendu un peu partout hors d’Allemagne), leurs publications dans la prestigieuse collection Orfeo d’Or n’a qu’une raison, la présence de Fritz Wunderlich dans les deux rôles titres. Formidable diseur pour "Judas", pour "Xerxes" il lui manque pourtant, dès l’ode de l’Empereur à son cher platane, cette poésie teintée de nostalgie que l’italien autorisait mieux, mais se fureur à l’acte III est fabuleuse. Les entourages sont modestes et seule l’Atalanta d’Ingeborg Hallstein atteint à l’émotion. Dispensable donc, d’autant que si Orfeo veut continuer d’augmenter la discographie de Rafael Kubelik, il y a d’autres trésors autrement chatoyants, comme cette "Messe Glagolitique" de Janacek où flamboie le soprano de Julia Varady…. This 1962 production of Xerxes was based on Rudolf Steglich’s 1958 edition, which closely follows the autograph score housed in the British Museum and uses a new German translation. The roles of Xerxes and Arsamenes, originally written for castrato sopranos, are here taken by tenor voices. As regards the orchestral direction, Rafael Kubelík favours a reserved, rather than overblown, string sound and adopts discreet vibrato, Baroque terraced dynamics and tempo relationships that avoid extremes. For today’s listeners, therefore, his interpretation falls midway between the productions based on Oskar Hagen’s arrangement, which largely reflected a romantic interpretation of the Baroque, and the current period-sonority versions. The star cast features Fritz Wunderlich, Naan Pöld, Hertha Töpper, Jean Cook, Ingeborg Hallstein, Carl Christian Kohn and Max Pröbstl, demonstrating how high the standards of opera production were at the time.
