Les amateurs de mélodies seront comblés par ce recueil enregistré en 2021 par deux jeunes artistes formidablement doués. Le jeune baryton suisse Aneas Humm et la pianiste hawaïenne Renate Rohling, tous les deux diplômés de la Juilliard School de New York, nous livrent en effet une prestation sensible dans un dialogue voix et piano en tout point remarquable. Intitulé "Embrace" (Étreinte), le répertoire regroupe près d’une trentaine de courtes mélodies dont de nombreuses raretés, à commencer par le cycle de 12 chants "Der Mensch und sein Tag", œuvre poignante du malheureux compositeur tchèque Viktor Ullmann, interné à Theresienstadt et gazé à Birkenau. On est admiratif devant le talent de compositrice sensible de Fanny Hensel à l’image de son mélancolique "Schwanlenlied" (Le chant du cygne), la simplicité majestueuse de Liszt dont le magnifique "Ihr Glocken von Marling" (Vous, les cloches de Marling) est un exemple patent et la fluidité mélodique de Grieg avec, entre autres moments remarquables, "Die verschwiegene Nachtigall" (Le rossignol discret) et "Ein Traum" (Un rêve). Award-winning baritone Äneas Humm and his pianist Renate Rohlfing present equally flawless and distinctive performances on their album "Embrace", encompassing songs by Franz Liszt, Edvard Grieg, Viktor Ullmann and Fanny Hensel. This selection of rarities from the art song repertoire draws together the different circumstances of four composers under the banner of a cohesive concept. Franz Liszt's search for simplicity, Edvard Grieg's desire for recognition beyond any reduction to nationalist stereotypes, Viktor Ullmann's acts of composing against death and suffering at the concentration camp at Auschwitz, and Fanny Hensel's emancipation from her brother Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy: "Embrace" encompasses all these stories, recounting situations of hope, fear, love and heartache.
