Son œuvre la plus radicale? Certainement. Carl Orff y renonce à l’allemand, écrit son ouvrage sur le grec ancien du Prométhée enchainé, et aura longuement pensé la genèse de l’œuvre en échangeant avec Wieland Wagner. Musique ou théâtre ? Théâtre tout entièrement, le chant n’y a guère de place qu’accentuant les déclamations, ou en lamentos, voir invectives furioso ; l’orchestre n’est que percussion et incluant nombre d’instruments extra européens, sans aucun exotisme et avec des hauteurs aléatoires. Cela n’empêche pas la puissance suggestive d’autant que quelques monstres viennent y faire rugir les souvenirs de leurs incarnations wagnériennes, augmentant la noirceur du drame, ardant sa superbe mythologique. L’œuvre aura connu une création difficile, le public déconcerté bouda, Michael Gielen lui redonna une seconde chance (on aimerait bien en avoir l’écho) magnifié par la mise en scène d’August Everding, avant que la Radio bavaroise ne reprenne ce Prométhée, le confiant d’abord en 1972 à Ferdinand Leitner, Rafaël Kubelik lui succédant en 1975 avec la même distribution, faisant rugir l’arsenal percussif, se souvenant qu’il était lui aussi compositeur. Un document qui capture le point de non-retour auquel était parvenu le compositeur et dont les instants les plus saisissants restent les interventions du Chœur, uniquement composé de voix féminines. What Carl Orff created with his Prometheus score is neither an opera in the traditional sense, nor an oratorio, nor a play with music, not even ‘authentic’ classical tragedy.
