Pour commémorer l'année Beethoven, cet album présente d'avantage de sortir du lot. Il s'agit nonobstant le Septuor, d'arrangements pour un ensemble de chambre comprenant cordes, clarinette, hautbois et cor. S'ajoute un ténor pour le lied Adelaïde et le cycle An die ferne Geliebte. Les Variations sur Judas Macchabée, l'oratorio de Haendel et le lied Adelaïde sont arrangés pour un octuor et leur facture s'inspire directement de l'Op.20 de Beethoven et de l'Octuor de Schubert composé en 1824. Andreas Tarkmann qui signe les deux arrangements, reste assez fidèle à la lettre tout en jouant astucieusement avec la riche palette de contrastes et de timbres qu'offre la formation élargie, n'hésitant pas à confronter cordes et vents dans un dialogue d'opposition. La relecture de l'Op.46, d'après un texte du poète Friedrich Mathisson donne l'impression d'une grande instabilité harmonique tout en proposant une exploration librement émancipée de la forme sonate. Andreas Tarkmann reprend le cycle An die Ferne Geliebte, premier cycle de lieder de l'histoire de la musique et basé sur le thème de l'absence, comme un jeu sur le mode question-réponse cher au Maître de Bonn. Chaque poème se répondant d'une façon proche ou lointaine. Dommage que la voix chancelante mais si évocatrice du ténor soit un peu noyée dans la nasse sonore. Le programme se clôt par le Septuor Op.20, prodige d'invention et de variété mélodique qui devient ici une merveilleuse démonstration chambriste. (Jérôme Angouillant)

Ludwig van Beethoven’s artistic greatness is measured not only by his symphonies, piano sonatas, and string quartets but also in the smaller dimensions of songs, duos, and ensemble music. Beethoven also set standards, created new things, and encouraged experiments in these secondary or occasional works – and did so with an impact felt right through to the present, as the arrangements by Andreas N. Tarkmann on this CD demonstrate – for example, in the dialogue form between voice or cello and piano and the sound world of winds and strings. Tarkmann has arranged the twelve variations on a theme from Judas Maccabaeus for octet and fully exploits expanded tone-color resources such as the juxtaposition of wind and string "choirs" already in the theme. When Tarkmann was asked whether an arrangement can be "better" than the original, he replied: "Both the variations and the song collection appealed very much to me as an arranger. Such an arrangement is of course a very precise occupation with the original source, and in both works I had the vision that their compositional qualities would be even more clearly audible in an instrumental version. By this I mean new audio perspectives, the clarification and elaboration of harmonic and formal structures as well as an enrichment of the tone colors".
