La Cantate dramatique "Ino" date des dernières années de la vie de Telemann. Elle s’appuie sur un pitch aussi tragique que fastueux musicalement. Ino, sœur de Sémélé est poursuivi par son amant Athamas. Ce dernier assassine un de ses deux fils. L’autre parvient à survivre sauvé par sa mère qui, se jetant d’une falaise échoue dans les bras de Neptune qui la transforme en déesse Leucothéa. L’œuvre proche de l’opéra alterne airs da capo et récitatifs accompagnés à l’orchestre. Soutenue par l’ensemble du Boston Early Music Festival rodé à ce répertoire depuis sa fondation (1980) et dirigé par les duettistes Stubbs / O’Dette, la soprano Amanda Forsythe incarne une Ino héroïque et profondément émouvante, assurant airs (redoutables) et longs récitatifs. Une voix agile et volontaire mais pâtissant d’un timbre parfois un peu pincé dans les vibratos des aigus. En complément d’un programme copieux (80’16) même successions d’airs et de récitatifs tirés de quelques opéras du compositeur. Forsythe y déploie tout son savoir-faire. Tristesse et alanguissement (merveilleux Rimembranza crudel (Germanicus). Pure virtuosité (Emma und Eginhard). Simplement décorative (Mischt ihr muntern Nachtigallen avec flutiaux obligato) comme peut l’être la musique de Telemann (airs de Flavius Bertaridus). Un bel ensemble! (Jérôme Angouillant)

Ino was the spouse of Athamas and thus the daughter-in-law of Aeolus, the ruler of the winds. For reasons that are not entirely clear, she incurs the wrath of Hera, the wife of the gods, who confuses Athamas to such an extent that he shoots one of his own sons and tries to kill the second - whereupon Ino throws herself into the sea with her offspring. In the end, mother and daughter are transformed into maritime deities. When Georg Philipp Telemann set this material to music, he was already well past eighty years old; musically, however, he burst forth as if he were a young man with a bright future ahead of him. The Ino of our new recording comes from the ranks of the Boston Early Music Festival. Amanda Forsythe, most recently celebrated as the irresistible Serva Padrona. This demanding role is the opening of a recital of arias, a portrait of the Telemann the opera composer, from monodrama to exuberant comedy and offers a glimpse of upcoming productions.
