Francesco Geminiani Sonates Pour Violoncelle Dostalier-lalonde Postscript - Cc72991

Depuis la prestation de Richard Webb dans l’enregistrement Pleeth/Hogwood gravé il y a un demi-siècle (L’Oiseau-Lyre), jusqu’à Christoph Dangel dans la récente parution chez CPO, l’implication du violoncelle dans la conduite du continuo n’innove certes pas dans la discographie du recueil publié en 1746 par Geminiani, dont la page-titre stipule « une étude particulière pour l’utilité de ceux qui accompagnent ». Ce qui n’empêche pas la notice de ce CD d’insister, à juste raison, sur l’importance de cette contribution, en sus de clavecin, théorbe et violone. À l’instar d’un précédent album (From Mannheim to Berlin), Octavie Dostaler-Lalonde a choisi Victor García García comme complice, dans la même tessiture ou rehaussée par le violoncelle piccolo (sonates 1 et 3). L’instrument étendu d’une corde aiguë s’entend aussi en dialogue dans une sonate de l’opus 1, et dans des arrangements de deux extraits du "Art of playing the Guitar or Cittra". L’Affetuoso malaisément ourlé de la plage 13 serait la seule berne à la mâture. Car globalement, la virtuose québécoise et ses capiteux coups d’archet caractérisent de stimulantes appropriations de l’univers du "Furibondo", dont les élans fantasques sont servis sans outrance par une équipe de Postscript forte en discipline. Considérant le minutage (53’47), dommage que deux maillons de l’opus 5 manquent à l’appel de ce disque au demeurant roboratif. (Christophe Steyne)

What first intrigued me about Geminiani as a musical figure was his propensity for unpredictable, asymmetrical and improvisatory style—both as a composer and as a performer. If his tempo rubato was apparently too wild for the Neapolitan musicians, his performances were greatly admired for their elegance and taste in England. My everlasting fascination with tempo rubato and the art of “reading between the lines” in terms of tempo, flexibility and rhythmic variations have led me to approach Geminiani’s music with this angle in mind. Moreover, during the recording sessions, many musical aspects—such as ornamentation, continuo realization, and dynamics—were intentionally left to the musicians’ extemporaneous decisions. We used the diversity of colors found in the various instruments forming the continuo group (harpsichord, cello, cello piccolo, violone, theorbo) to create different textures for each movement. Almost like in jazz, each instrument is given its moment to come to the foreground and emerge from the sound of the group.
