Composées par Tadeusz Paciorkiewicz (1916-1998) à une trentaine d’années d’écart dans un vingtième siècle riche d’effervescences, ces deux œuvres relèvent à l’évidence de styles résolument différents ; elles illustrent de surcroit deux conceptions concertantes plutôt distinctes puisque la première fait intervenir un violon solo tandis que la seconde fait appel à deux solistes, assumant ensemble ou de façon complémentaire leur propos spécifique. De structure traditionnelle, oscillant entre tension et recueillement, d’écriture très fouillée, la première œuvre s’approche sans difficulté des plus beaux concertos pour violon composés durant le 20e siècle. Le langage de la seconde œuvre s’affranchit encore plus de la tonalité, tandis que sa structure semble plus atomisée. Dans ce contexte où les repères sonores s’estompent peut-être d’avantage, les interventions des deux violons demeurent très raffinées, leurs échanges avec le reste de l’orchestre étant régulièrement scandés grâce au concours des percussions. Rien d’agressif cependant, l’intériorité restant de mise. Au total, à travers ces premières discographiques, un musicien et une œuvre à découvrir avec intérêt. ‘Tadeusz Paciorkiewicz wrote over three hundred and seventy compositions. His oeuvre covers all genres of instrumental, vocal, and vocal and instrumental music. The composer used to say that “even the best craftsmanship and compositional skills are only means to achieve the goal of expressing a work.” In every composition by Tadeusz Paciorkiewicz, there is a multiplicity and changeability of moods. The character of his music oscillates between the poles of extreme emotions, using sophisticated nuances. The composer received many awards and distinctions for his pedagogical and artistic work.’ Tadeusz Paciorkiewicz’s three-movement Violin Concerto is similar to the 19th-century instrumental concertos, as far its formal shape is concerned. The harmony of the work is heterogeneous, which can be seen in the juxtapositions of the violin and the orchestral parts – the orchestra’s harmonic palette gives the impression of being cut off from the solo voice. The Concerto for Two Violins and Orchestra, on the other hand, is a three-movement composition, providing an opportunity to show the mastery of both soloists against the background of the entire orchestra as well as in chamber instrumental combinations.
