La "Petite Messe Solennelle" de Rossini n’a de petit que son effectif d’origine avec ses quatre solistes, huit choristes, deux pianos et un harmonium. Pour cet enregistrement, la partie du second piano a été adaptée par le pianiste Tobias Koch pour n’en faire qu’une. Derrière cette modestie apparente se dévoile une composition savoureuse, théâtrale et raffinée, au merveilleux lyrisme allant ou recueilli. Renfermant toute la science et le caractère opératique de son auteur entre candeur, ferveur, clarté mélodieuse et originalités d’écriture, elle est tout autant une main tendue entre le passé et l’avenir que le testament musical de son auteur. Réalisée en septembre 2016 en la basilique de Knechtsteden lors du Festival de Musique Ancienne de la ville, la prise de son ne rend pas forcément grâce aux interprètes. Le son du piano est brouillé par une importante réverbération. Et malgré une belle interprétation vocale, cela entraîne un manque de rondeur et une certaine acidité dans les voix. Le pire est dans les tuttis où la polyphonie chorale accompagnée du piano donne un embrouillamini regrettable. Reste la beauté incontestable de l’œuvre dont la musicale spiritualité et la dramaturgie mystique délicieusement touchante exercent un charme inévitable. (Laurent Mineau)

"Here it is, my poor little Mass. Have I truly composed sacred music, or merely something sacrilegious?" With these words, the 72-year-old Gioachino Rossini addressed the "dear Lord", to whom he wished to dedicate his most extensive and, at the same time, one of his most significant and original late works – a sacred composition of nearly full-length dimensions akin to a grand cathedral Mass. However, the instrumentation consists only of instruments commonly found in any well-appointed 19th-century household. A piano and a harmonium accompany the soloists and choir, enriching the performance with lively rhythms, intricate figures, and distinctive sonic textures. The treatment of the liturgical text is not entirely orthodox: "I was born for opera buffa. You know that well!" Rossini confessed to the Lord more than thirty years after composing his last opera. And he expressed his gratitude for this special gift with "a touch of skill and a touch of heart" – enough to captivate both earthly and heavenly audiences alike.
