Peut-être est-ce à cause de la période tourmentée – ou comme nous le suggère un dictionnaire des musiciens de référence (le fameux ‘Grove’) – à cause d’un don trop précoce que le nom de Ludomir Rózycki a été oublié ? Il a pourtant été du mouvement Jeune Pologne avec entre autres compositeurs, Karol Szymanowski. Sa carrière de compositeur débute en 1904 avec un Sherzo pour orchestre et il sera vite reconnu, devenant même chef des Opéra de Lvov et de Varsovie. Sa musique pour piano constitue sans doute la part la plus discrète et méconnue de son œuvre. Les pièces que nous offre Valentina Seferinova nous font découvrir un musicien bien de son temps, qui affectionne les formes brèves mais très évocatrices, sans pour autant être anecdotiques. Dans un langage musical qui peut rappeler tour à tour Debussy, Chopin ou Scriabine, voire le discret Liadov, il développe un univers qui lui est propre, que l’on découvre avec un réel plaisir et dans lequel on aime à s’attarder. Une figure essentielle et injustement oubliée de la musique polonaise du XXe siècle qui mérite bien plus que votre simple curiosité. (Marc Ossorguine)

Ludomir Rózycki was born in Warsaw. He received his musical education in his hometown, where he also developed his skill at the piano as a pupil of Aleksander Michalowski, while his composition skills came under the watchful eye of Zygmunt Noskowski at the Warsaw Music Institute. In February 1904 he made his début as a composer – his symphonic scherzo Stanczyk op. 1 was performed with the National Philharmonic, conducted by Emil Mlynarski. Two years later, in Berlin, two of his symphonic poems were performed – Stanczyk and Mona Lisa Gioconda. Both of them are characteristic of Rózycki because he often sought inspiration in paintings. In 1907 he rejected the offer of a professorship of composition at the Oslo Conservatory and he spent the next four years in Lvov. There he became the conductor of the local opera, and piano professor at the conservatory of the Galician Music Society. In 1913 Rózycki moved to Berlin for the next six years, where he composed primarily chamber works, including the Piano Quintet in C minor and String Quartet in D minor. That period’s crowning achievement was the opera, Eros and Psyche. It was Rózycki who wrote the music for the first Polish sound film. This composer from Warsaw was also one of the precursors of the avant-garde in Polish music, as shown by his opera The Devilish Mill (1931). Additionally, Rózycki created the Polish Composers’ Society. Unfortunately, a sizeable part of his legacy was destroyed in a house fire, while he lived in Warsaw. He died in Katowice.
