Mieczyslaw Surzynski Musique Sacrée Kaczorowski - Ap0586 - Acte Préalable

Fils d'organiste, Mieczyslaw Surzynski (1866-1924) approfondit son éducation musicale aux conservatoires de Berlin et de Leipzig. Il se spécialise assez vite dans la musique religieuse et la pratique de l'orgue à Regensbourg. En 1890, il s'installe à Poznan et prend les fonctions de directeur artistique de la Société musicale de la ville. Sa carrière l’entraînera par la suite à Varsovie où il cumulera les postes d'organiste, de chef d'orchestre et de pédagogue. Cette monographie enregistrée par le baryton et organiste Robert Kaczorowski offre un bel aperçu de sa production religieuse. La musique de Surzynski, issue du mouvement cécilien en vogue à l'époque en Europe revendique une certaine forme de simplicité loin de la polyphonie traditionnelle. Dans les deux Messes, par ailleurs assez longuettes et monocordes, la voix soliste et mélodique est ici conduite par l'orgue harmonique comme un wagon sur des rails. L'auditeur pourra en revanche se satisfaire des deux chants "Le Notre Père" et l'"Ave Maria", entonnés avec ferveur et contrition par notre baryton qui s'accompagne lui-même à l'orgue. Articulés avec éloquence, les deux Chants op. 17 sont de même nature, solennels et majestueux. Le Requiem op. 38 quant à lui referme le programme avec un recueillement sincère et communicatif. Mieczyslaw Surzynski received his first music lessons from his organist father. He then went on to study music theory, composition and organ and piano at the conservatories in Berlin and Leipzig. At some point in his life, he became interested in church music. This was undoubtedly influenced by his brother Fr. Józef Surzynski. Mieczyslaw therefore undertook studies at the School of Church Music in Regensburg, so that after graduating from there he focused exclusively on religious music in his musical output as a composer. He was an organist, choral conductor and pedagogue. He taught an organ class at the Music Institute in Warsaw, and after Zygmunt Noskowski’s death in 1909 – also the counterpoint class. He died suddenly at the age of 58. . In the context of the presented album, I must mention that I was once again surprised by the director of the phonographic publishing house Acte Préalable, Mr Jan A. Jarnicki, who asked me a few months ago if I knew Surzynski’s Requiem and if I would be interested in recording this work. The answer to the first question was negative. This is because I did not know the piece. However, the answer to the second question was most positive. So I set to work, first and foremost, to establish whether there was any possibility of acquiring other vocal-instrumental works by Mieczyslaw Surzynski besides the Funeral Mass. It soon became apparent that the Polona website, which belongs to the National Library in Warsaw, contains many of the composer’s works that would fill a CD.
