Les Fils Bach Sinfonias De Chambre Controcorrente Orchestra - Pas1074 - Passacaille - Classical

Voir naître un nouvel ensemble est toujours un évènement : voici Controcorrente, orchestre classique sur instruments anciens ou copies, jouant sans chef et revendiquant autogestion, liberté et responsabilité individuelle (ce que certains membres comme la Konzertmeisterin Alfa Bakieva ont largement démontré antérieurement). Mais pas pour autant formé de débutants : à bien y regarder, on reconnaîtra des piliers des orchestres d’O. Dantone, A. Marcon ou A. Curtis… entre autres ! Leur programme est réjouissant : quelques symphonies des fils de Bach entre « Empfindsamkeit » et « Sturm un Drang », dans ce style si particulier mêlant brusques embardées, changements d’affects inattendus et fins suspendues. L’ensemble a choisi une géométrie d’époque (recommandée par Quantz) : un seul alto pour 6 violons, et des hautboïstes jouant également les flûtes : c’est un régal dans la symphonie Fk 64 de Wilhelm Friedemann, faux « concerto per molti stromenti » et vraie ouverture (de cantate) à l’origine, qui illumine le disque. Le reste est plus traditionnel et un peu uniforme du fait de l’unité stylistique, même si Johann Christian se distingue par sa manière d’opposer deux blocs (aigus contre graves) et Carl Philipp Emmanuel par ses compositions moins orthodoxes. Un très beau disque qui signe l’arrivée d’un ensemble audiblement heureux d’éprouver sa liberté, un peu échevelé pour l’instant, mais dont il faudra suivre l’évolution. (Olivier Eterradossi)

Symphonies of Bach’s Sons by the Controcorrente Orchestra: A new dynamic Italian Baroque Orchestra makes its debut with not mainstream symphonies! As their name indicates, they choose to swim against the current and explore hidden gems of the repertoire. But not only are they original, young and full of dynamic energy, the result is simply stunningly good and makes this music come alive as if those pieces were created for the first time. Choosing four of Bach’s sons, all born between 1710 and 1735 and programming their exploration of the then new genre between c.1755 and c.1770, when the five Sinfonie recorded here were composed. Three keywords are essential: Galant Italian style, German Empfindsamer style and the European Sturm und Drang movement. It’s all about cantabile and sensitivity in the first two cases and about unbridled emotions announcing the romantic era in the third one… In conclusion, with these five rarely-heard symphonies by four of Bach’s sons, the Controcorrente Orchestra offers a captivating insight into the mid-eighteenth-century symphony repertoire across Northern Germany and England, which is quite representative of a genre that we too often know only through its later and most famous Viennese protagonists, Haydn and Mozart.
