Le Diary de Samuel Pepys (1633-1703), relatant la vie quotidienne à Londres dans les années 1660, a inspiré la journée d’un Gentleman qu’évoque ce CD et que détaille sa notice (allemand, anglais). Spécialiste d’albums-concept (Musique is the Cure, Le Masque de fer) et de concerts à thème impliquant l’auditoire, Barbara Heindlmeier et l’ensemble La Ninfea proposent un programme illustratif associé à des œuvres du Baroque d’Outre-Manche. Un réveil avec des airs de Matthew Locke ("The Tempest") et Henry Purcell ("Fairy Queen") lève le rideau sur un homme affairé (Solo d’Andrew Parcham), avant un petit-déjeuner qui s’alimente de variations sur "Greensleeves" (alias Pudding and Pies, –on comprend mieux l’allusion). Une Sonate pour flûte à bec installe un moment plus cérémonieux, précédant un après-midi au parc : une danse traditionnelle plante l’ambiance de plein air, qui devient galante ("Vaghe fonti che mormorando") tandis que pépient les oiseaux (une sonate imitative de Williams). Vient l’inévitable heure du thé et sa gourmandise ("Strawberries and cream", empruntée à un recueil de Playford). La soirée se passera au théâtre (Sinfonia de Giulia Cesare, Sonate en trio du même Haendel). Esprits et paroles s’échauffent au gré d’un "Ground after the Scotch Humour". Le chant d’un rossignol ("Engels Nachtegaeltje" de Van Eyck) amène le crépuscule et un congé signé de Purcell ("Curtain Tune" du "Timon of Athens"). Un épilogue enjoué et vigoureux, sur l’air populaire "John come kiss me now", aux accents folks, conclut cette journée sur ce que l’on devine. Une charmante soirée à deux s’ouvre à notre gentilhomme dont l’équipe aura croqué avec un art consommé l’agenda bien rempli. Virtuose et savoureuse, l’interprétation profite d’une superbe prise de son. Un réjouissant album qui donne chair et sens à un répertoire bien choisi. (Christophe Steyne)

Barbara Heindlmeier & La Ninfea spend a day as a gentleman in baroque London “Gentleman for a Day” is la Ninfea’s second production with Perfect Noise, this time with founding member and renowned recorder player Barbara Heindlmeier as the soloist, also known for her excitingly innovative concepts. When thinking of a true London gentleman, the first thing that comes to mind are top hats and courteous behaviour, elegance and elevated status. Recorder, too? But of course! Well, the fine gentleman didn’t (yet) have a top hat around 1700, but of course it was excellent manners to have a recorder in your pocket for you to, for example, serenade the lady you adored at any given moment - a welcome occasion for Barbara Heindlmeier and her colleagues to be “Gentleman for a Day”. Everything is included: from getting up in the morning to going for a walk, visiting the royal court and going to the opera, to the obligatory five o’clock tea and preparing for the said serenade. An exciting and busy day plotted out with music by composers such as G.F. Handel, H. Purcell, M. Locke and J. Playford. The Bremen baroque ensemble La Ninfea stands for the highest artistic standards. They have since made a name for themselves with creative, cross-genre concert formats. This baroque ensemble with a varying line-up is completely dedicated to the art of baroque ornamenation and improvisation. Their own contributions such as the divisions on ‘Strawberries and Cream’ or ‘John come kiss me now’ underline the richness of colour, emotional density and fast-moving contrasts so inherent to this repertoire.
