Avec ce remarquable quatrième volume de l’intégrale en cours, voici venu le temps des solistes. Leurs voix désormais familières sont propulsées sur le devant de la scène par un programme intelligemment construit. Il nous donne à connaître des œuvres de petit format, sans doute conçues pour des usages privés, reposant chacune sur la prestation d’un unique soliste accompagné par un instrumentarium très réduit mais utilisé de manière optimale. Défilent ainsi un alto pétri d’humanité, une basse chaudement colorée et percutante, un ténor triomphant et une soprano acclimatant le style italien au protestantisme allemand… Le sentiment d’intimité qui s’en dégage est contrebalancé par trois œuvres convoquant l’ensemble des voix : toutes illustrent le travail que Kuhnau devait fournir pour accompagner les cérémonies funéraires et datent de périodes différentes de sa carrière, dans un raccourci assez saisissant. Interprètes inspirés, Opella Musica et la camerata lipsiensis progressent dans leur maîtrise stylistique tout en évitant l’ostentation, avec une humanité et une éloquence qui me touchent profondément. En prime très bel orgue Silbermann, assez discret mais qui se révèle brièvement dans « Gott hat uns nicht gesetzt zum Zorn » : au total une vraie réussite et un beau moment d’émotion. The seven works brought together on Vol. 4 of our complete recording of Kuhnau’s cantatas offer a remarkable cross section featuring sacred works – and more. They have also been transmitted in all sorts of different ways. The spectrum ranges from extant autographs and original printed editions leaving no doubt about Kuhnau’s authorship to copies from what was clearly a later time or sources from rather peripheral lines of transmission in which the materials themselves as well as the stylistic findings offer reasons for critical skepticism about the ascription of the works to Kuhnau. The most reliable sources as far as authenticity is concerned are those for the two burial songs »Gott hat uns nicht gesetzt zum Zorn« and »Ach, Gott, wie lässt du mich verstarren.« These two works are from Kuhnau’s early period but nonetheless pieces of great artistic mastery and have to be regarded as model examples of the church style that exercised an absolutely enormous influence on the formation of the church styles of Bach, Handel, and Telemann.
