Jan Skrzydlewski (1867–1943) fut en son temps un pianiste de renom, étudiant à Poznan puis à Berlin, avant de s’installer à Paris, puis de retourner en Pologne. Il fut un des cofondateurs du Conservatoire national de Poznan, où il devint ensuite professeur de piano jusqu’à 1926. Ses oeuvres sont ensuite tombées dans l’oubli le plus complet. Le label Acte Préalable nous a habitués à sortir des compositeurs de l’ombre. Je dois avouer que je n’ai pas été séduit par les oeuvres présentées ici, assez scolaires, et/ou jouées avec somme toute assez peu de passion. Les pianistes trouveront toutefois certainement quelques pièces (certaines sont plutôt bien tournées et agréables à écouter) pour renouveler leur répertoire. (Walter Appel)

Jan Skrzydlewski was born in his family’s home in Sulecin, to the family of Stefan and Klementyna Rózanski. He graduated from Maria Magdalena’s middle school in Poznan. From 1891–1894, he studied at the Music Academy in Berlin, and between 1895–1898 he studied piano with one of the most renowned teachers of his time – Teodor Leszetycki. Between 1899 to 1902 he lived and worked in Paris. He then moved to Lvov, where he worked as a teacher at the Music Institute, and in 1905 he established his own school. He was noted as a pianist, music critic and composer. During the war, he stayed in Great Poland. In 1919, he was one of the founders and organizers of the National Music Conservatory in Poznan, where he took the position as professor of piano until 1926. He then taught at the Great Poland’s Music School from 1926–1939. He died on March 26th 1943 in Poznan and was buried in the cemetery near Bluszczowa street in Poznan.
