 À côté des Études de concert op. 95, 98, 105, 111 et 126 dont Piers Lane a donné une élégante interprétation (Hyperion, CDH 55387), Moscheles, compositeur et pianiste virtuose apprécié par Mendelssohn, produisit une série de 25 Études de perfectionnement, son op. 70. Edoardo Torbianelli, Claudio Colombo, mais surtout le regretté Michaël Ponti (Newport Classic NCD 60088) en interprétèrent les pièces les plus marquantes. Aujourd’hui Michele Bolla sur un fortepiano McNulty d’après un Conrad Graf de 1819 propose une intégrale de l’Op. 70 agrémentée de trois études supplémentaires interprétées sur un Fortepiano Erard à double échappement de 1844. Comme nombre de ses contemporains assurant la transition du classicisme au romantisme naissant (Hummel, Kalkbrenner, Pixis, Herz), Moscheles fut vite mais très injustement relégué au rang de compositeur mineur par les gloires éclaboussantes de Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Weber, Schubert, Schumann, Liszt. Son œuvre mérite cependant d’être mieux connue et reconnue à sa juste valeur. Le présent enregistrement constitue une belle occasion de réévaluer sa production dans un genre que le piano triomphant du XIXe siècle ne pouvait que stimuler et développer. Faites écouter à l’aveugle la plupart de ces plages et demandez qui est l’auteur de ces pièces…. Le nom de Chopin surgira certainement à propos des accords arpégés de la seconde étude, des gammes chromatiques de la troisième. Chopin lui-même appréciait hautement la quinzième Allegro giocoso pour la légèreté et la flexibilité des deux mains. En sa compagnie ce sont les noms de Mendelssohn (n° 13, 14), Schumann (n° 4) ou de Liszt (n° 6, 8, 23) qui surgiront spontanément. L’interprétation engagée, brillante et sensible de Michele Bolla, qui montre parfois les limites de l’instrument, confère à cet ensemble un intérêt historique et un charme absolument indéniable, en même temps qu’il fait désirer sa réactualisation à nos oreilles sur un Steinway, un Bösendorfer, ou un Bechstein contemporains probablement plus à même de restituer à ces études leur caractère novateur. (Jacques-Philippe Saint-Gerand) As stringent a critic of his fellow composers as he was of himself, Mendelssohn wrote in unusually effusive terms about the Etudes Op.70 when Moscheles sent them to him in 1829. ‘Your splendid Etudes are the best pieces of music that I have heard for a long time, as instructive and useful for the musician as they are gratifying for the listener. Might you be prepared to publish a third volume? You would be rendering a service to all music lovers.’ The Op.70 Etudes have attracted previous recordings, complete and in part, but they are presented here for the first time on instruments of the composer’s time – an 1844 Erard and a modern copy of an 1819 Graf model – thus releasing and intensifying the colour and playfulness of works which transcend their didactic origins. Some of technical and tonal innovations in these studies represented a creative stimulus for composers including Schumann, Liszt and Chopin. Schumann dedicated his ambitious Sonata Op.14 to Moscheles, and believed that the Op.70 Etudes made his friend one of the greatest composers of piano music of the age. Surely the greatest piano teacher of his age – perhaps the greatest ever – Chopin religiously used the Op.70 Etudes for instruction as a kind of New Testament to set alongside Bach and Beethoven. Moreover, they clearly made a considerable impact on his own Etudes, Op.10 and Op.25. No.23 of Moscheles’s set is the only explicitly programmatic one, cast as ‘a battle among demons’, but there is no shortage of immediate drama and theatre throughout the set, especially in the hands of Michele Bolla. ‘Fine performances, and well recorded,’ was the verdict of Gramophone on Michele Bolla’s Piano Classics album of the Piano Sonatas by Moscheles (PCL10188). This new recording of the Etudes is sure to win equally warm praise and a new audience for its composer.
