L’instrument de Paul Hindemith ? L’alto, qu’il tint en quatuor, et pour lequel il écrivit quelques une de ses plus belles pages, concertantes comme l’émouvant "Schwanendreher", ou chambriste. Le tendre amoroso qui berce la Fantaisie ouvrant la Sonate op. 11 n° 4 dit assez les tendresses que lui inspirére la clef d’Ut. Maria Shetty en magnifie la mélodie sinueuse. Elle sera moins à l’aise avec les angles du final que Tabea Zimmermann (Naïve), Nobuko Imai (BIS) ou Lawrence Power (Hyperion) emportaient avec plus de feu. C’est un peu la pierre d’achoppement de ce beau disque qui herborise entre les Sonates Solo – la difficile Sonate op. 25 n° 1 -et celles avec piano : peu couvert au disque, l’alto d’Hindemith est cependant royalement servi. Pourtant Maria Shetty trouve le ton très Bach de la Sonate op. 25 n° 1, la détaille avec art, en fait entendre les méditations avec une vraie poésie, avant d’achopper sur les sécheresses de la Sonate pour alto et piano de 1922, peu aidée par le jeu métrique de Monika Wilinska-Tarcholik qui en bride les danses obstinées du premier mouvement. The album contains recordings of three sonatas by Paul Hindemith, who began his compositional career under the influence of Claude Debussy – who was still active back then – and ended it in a completely different reality of the 1960s, in the era of sonoristic, formal and harmonic experiments. He was also an excellent violist, hence a significant number of his works dedicated to viola. The first sonata is still of a romantic nature; it captivates us with its beauty and richness of motifs, whereas the other two are much more contemporary in terms of sound. All of them are demanding, both technically and structurally. Maria Shetty, a violist associated with the Cracow Academy of Music and the NOSPR, chamber musician, co-founder of the Messages Quartet, and pianist Monika Wilinska-Tarcholik form a perfect duo. They guide the listener through complex, meaningful musical matter with virtuoso flair and with great sensitivity to tone colour and stylistic details.
