 De ces deux petits concertos des frères Haydn, c’est celui de Michael qui suscite le plus d’intérêt : on ne croule pas sous les enregistrements, d’autant qu’une bonne partie d’entre eux offrent la version avec orgue. Dans le cas présent, l’assemblage de timbres alto-clavecin est très intéressant, surtout dans l’adagio central. Avec le concerto Hob. VIIIa/4, on ne peut pas dire qu’on soit face à du très grand Joseph Haydn : plutôt facile techniquement et moyennement inspirée, l’œuvre est une production assez standard pour l’époque (du reste, le si prolifique Joseph ne se consacra guère à cette forme : 5 partitions dont une perdue…). L’éditeur met l’accent sur une particularité : Terakado (qu’on a souvent entendu emmener de son premier violon La Petite Bande, Les « Arts Flo » ou La Chapelle Royale) joue « chin-off » (violon posé sur la clavicule, ce qui implique une technique particulière de la main gauche). C’est certes intéressant, mais outre le fait qu’il ne soit pas certain que ce soit historiquement pertinent pour ces œuvres on peut se demander si cela donne des caractéristiques détectables par une oreille « moyenne ». Il me semble (mais l’aurais-je ressenti si je ne l’avais pas su ?) que cela induit une certaine légèreté d’appui, un son moins corsé et peut-être un peu de fragilité tonale dans certaines positions ou certains traits. Le violoniste signe également les cadences des deux concertos. L’orchestre, dirigé du clavecin par Noriko Amano, « fait le travail » mais n’insuffle pas spécialement d’esprit aux partitions. VIIa/4, also known as Violin Concerto No. 4. It was composed around 1769, when he was the Kapellmeister at the Esterházy court.The style is typical of Haydn’s concertos of this period: very similar, for example, to his Cello Concerto in C Major. The orchestral scoring is for strings only. In this concerto, Haydn offers a full exposition of the aspects and attractions of the violin with elegant simplicity. Michael Haydn (1737–1806) was one of the most accomplished composers of church music in the later 18th century. He was the younger brother of Joseph Haydn and an intimate friend of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791). The Concerto for Harpsichord (or Organ) and Viola is an early work that was composed between the years 1757 and 1762 when Haydn was Kapellmeister to the bishop of Grosswardein in Hungary (now Oradea in Romania). The combination of harpsichord and viola is very rare in Baroque music. Although Michael Haydn could have considered pairing, for example, the violin and the harpsichord, the warm sound of the viola supports the harpsichord perfectly well.
