Ce "Cleofida, Konigin von Indien" est bien le fruit d’une collaboration entre Haendel et Telemann. L’œuvre originale de Haendel "Poro, re dell indie" est basée sur le livret italien très prisé de Métastase "Allesandro nell’indie" (cf. les opéras de Vinci, Hasse, Porpora...etc). Le titre de l’ouvrage fut modifié et le livret traduit en allemand, récitatifs compris avec l’aide de Telemann (qui n’hésite pas pour l’occasion à compléter la partition) pour convenir au public du Gensemarktheater de Hambourg où les représentations furent données entre 1732 et 1736. Sur un scénario riche de rebondissements mêlant l’héroïsme à l’amour fidèle, Haendel privilégie les moments lyriques aux dépends de l’intrigue dramatique faisant alterner airs effusifs empreints de tendresse et d’autres qui ont une fonction purement narrative mais qui possèdent toujours une qualité d’écriture incomparable. Les sublimes duos de Porus et de Cléofida (fin Acte 1, début Acte 2) en témoignent. Entre airs et récitatifs, la dramaturgie elle-même est suffisamment bien ficelée par le librettiste et ne laisse que de brefs intermèdes instrumentaux en guise de pause. Côté plateau, les chanteurs mâles portent des rôles un peu trop lourds pour leur frêles épaules. L’Alexander de Jorge Navarro Colorado est plus fade que téméraire et Florian Götz incarne un Porus emprunté (Senza Porcelle). Les sopranos Johanna Pommeranz et Suzanne Jerosme (Erixena et Cléofida) chantent leur partie avec une belle magnanimité (Divin "So il ciel mi divide"). Ajoutons la direction attentive de Jörg Halubek et un orchestre baroque remarquable. Une version qui complétera utilement celle de Fabio Biondi préférable sur le plan vocal. (Jérôme Angouillant)

A highlight of our novelties is the concertante premiere of Handel's opera "Poro, Re dell' Indie" in a German/Italian version by Georg Philipp Telemann. Some of Handel's Italian operas were so popular that just one year later they were being performed not only in England but throughout Europe - for example, under Telemann at the Gänsemarkt Opera House. So that his Hamburg audience could understand the turbulent story of Alexander the Great and his entanglements with the Indian royal couple Cleofida (who now became the title heroine) and Poro, Telemann translated the plot-driving recitatives into German and recomposed them; Handel's arias remained original and in Italian. "CLEOFIDA - Queen of India" was a box-office hit in Hamburg at the beginning of the 18th century - virtuously interpreted on cpo by Il Gusto Barocco, one of the most important baroque orchestras in southern Germany, which here once again fills an old material with new life through different approaches.
