Décidément, le Saul de Haendel a de la chance en scène : après la proposition inspirée de Barrie Kosky pour Glyndebourne, voici que Claus Guth relève le défi de transposer l’oratorio en action dramatique, et avec pas moins de bonheur. Translation dans notre aujourd’hui, le sujet de Saul est intemporel, mais il parle à notre modernité, Claus Guth l’a bien compris qui profite de l’œuvre pour nous interroger, nous plongeant dans un spectacle enténébré, plein d’effets saisissants, où le chœur joue un rôle majeur, subtilement intégré à la dramaturgie épurée , et pourtant emplie de signifiants, voulue par le metteur en scène. Une fois commencer le visionnage, avec Saul se lavant des horreurs de la bataille, impossible de ne pas se laisser porter jusqu’au bout de l’œuvre. Heureux Claus Guth qui a trouvé pour incarner le Roi un chanteur à la démesure du personnage : Florian Boesch impressionne dans la fureur, dans le doute, dans le désespoir, génial simplement, centre d’un plateau où tous excellent, même Anna Prohaska qui trouve en Merab une occasion de faire entendre sa voix au naturel, sans plus aucune des afféteries dont elle encombre ses disques : la scène la transfigure, comme le David de Jake Arditti ou l’étonnante Sorcière d’Endor campée par Rafal Tomkiewicz. Sur ce sombre chef- d’œuvre, Christopher Moulds étend les ténèbres héroïques ou tragiques du Freiburger Barockorchester, inspirant à la représentation une émotion qui m’aura longuement poursuivi, affirmant la hauteur inextinguible du génie dramatique de Haendel. In 2009, Claus Guth staged a highly impressive “Messiah” at the Theater an der Wien; with “Saul”, he created again breathtaking musical theater at its finest. Florian Boesch in the title role dominates the production as the ruler slipping into madness. Boesch is an elemental force that attracts attention on stage like a black hole.
