Korngold Sextuor op 10 - Suite op 23 Quatuor Aron - CPO777600 - CPO - Classique - Nos labels

La première partie de la carrière de Korngold se déroula à Vienne à l’époque de la Deuxième Ecole Viennoise à laquelle il fut associé sans toutefois y participer. Il partit à Hollywood en 1934. Avec le Sextuor, résolument Brahmsien dans le premier mouvement, plus personnel dans l’Adagio, l’adolescent qu’était Korngold nous dévoile sa maîtrise du jeu de ces instruments. L’Intermezzo enchanteur nous soulage de l’émotion contenue de l’Adagio avant de culminer dans le Presto-finale mouvementé, terminant avec un retour du début du premier mouvement. Korngold fut le premier compositeur à écrire pour le pianiste Paul Wittgenstein qui avait perdu le bras droit pendant la Première Guerre - un concerto (1923) d’abord puis cette suite (1929). Elle est de conception baroque débutant par un prélude et fugue ; suit alors une valse, parodie irrespectueuse de la valse viennoise. Entre le Scherzo, marqué Grotesk et le Rondo-Finale (Variations), il y a le très beau Lied, duo passionné entre le piano et le premier violon. Le Quatuor Aron et ses invités nous offrent une interprétation passionnée de ces œuvres finalement assez méconnues. (Alan McKay)

The Aron Quartet enjoyed well-deserved success with its cpo recording of the Korngold String Quartets, in which the four musicians "strikingly bring the scores' enormous wealth of colours and gestures to life and light." (FonoForum 01/10) Now the quartet (with guests) applies itself to more chamber works by Korngold, where the composer again shows himself free of stylistic or intellectual restraints. Using a wide variety of scorings, the composer seeks to surmount formal barriers and reach the utmost limits of structure and expression. He found in chamber music the inner peace that he needed after completing major works – a relaxation, not to say a cleansing, which clearly showed that his mastery of music for the opera stage and the movie screen was matched by his skill in the creation of more intimate works. The two works recorded here – the String Sextet in D major op. 10 and the Suite op. 23 – are highly individual examples of Korngold's innovative approach to chamber music. The Sextet is the work of a wunderkind – or rather, of a wondrous youth, already being compared with the young Mozart and Mendelssohn on account of his compositions' artistic maturity. The Suite, on the other hand, directly followed Korngold's most ambitious opera, Das Wunder der Heliane, which he completed in his early thirties.
