C’est à Schwerin (Mecklemburg) que naquit en 1810 Friedrich Wilhelm Kücken. Pédagogue, chef de chœur, il composa presque exclusivement pour la voix : un opéra et des Lieder. Malheureux en amour – sa future balle famille rompit ses fiançailles, apprenant qu’il était fils de bourreau – mais heureux en musique puisque ses mélodies connurent un véritable succès populaire de son vivant… avant de tomber dans un oubli presque complet : Richard Tauber, puis Joan Sutherland l’inscrivirent à leurs programmes de concerts. A notre connaissance, l’encyclopédiste du Lied Herr Pr Dr Fischer-Dieskau ne l’enregistra pas. Comment expliquer cette désaffection ? Certes, Kücken ne va pas fouiller les tréfonds de l’âme humaine comme Schubert, il n’a ni l’inquiétante étrangeté, ni la künstleriche Phantasie d’un Schumann, il reste à la surface des choses, se complaît dans l’agrément. Après tout, Tosti aussi, et il n’a pour autant jamais quitté le répertoire. Mais la légèreté que l’on admet de la part d’un compositeur italien, pour un Allemand ne pardonne pas. L’excellence de la réalisation musicale n’y peut rien, ce pourtant très beau disque s’adresse en priorité au mélomane chevronné, qui aime à explorer les marges du Lied, pour changer un peu des Schubert, Schumann, Brahms et Wolf, auxquels on finit invariablement par revenir. The present CD provides a fascinating insight into the life and work of the composer Friedrich Wilhelm Kücken. Born in 1810 in Bleckede near Lüneburg, his musical talent led him early to Schwerin. The CD features almost exclusively world-first recordings of his songs, which have largely been forgotten until now. Kücken's sensitive melodies and masterful composition skills come to the fore on the newly released album, ranging from poignant farewell songs to light-hearted and humorous pieces. The critical edition on which the recordings are based comes from Edition Massonneau. The dedications of the songs tell intriguing stories about Kücken's personal environment. A significant part of the fortune of Kücken's wife Henriette, including his residence, was bequeathed to the foundation named after him. The foundation supported "destitute musical talents, composers, teachers, singers, soloists of any instrument" until 1939. The present CD is a publication of the Stiftung Mecklenburg in cooperation with Deutschlandfunk Kultur, Rondeau Production, and Edition Massonneau.
