Ferdinando Sebastiani Fantaisies Dopéra Pour Clarinette Et Piano Botta Galiano

Bien oublié de nos jours quoiqu’il fût le fondateur de l’école napolitaine de clarinette, Ferdinando Sebastiani (1803-1860) était proche ami de Donizetti, Mercadante, Rossini, Cavallini, Verdi, et se produisit comme soliste sur la scène ou dans la fosse de leurs opéras. Rédacteur d’une Méthode pour clarinette à treize clefs, publiée à Naples en 1855, Sébastiani s’inspira dans celle-ci et dans ses compositions des principes de Jean-Xavier Lefèvre (1763-1829) qui prônait la position supérieure de l’anche de roseau à l’embouchure de l’instrument, donnant ainsi plus d’expressivité à l’interprète. La clarinette étant un instrument à anche simple, contrairement au hautbois ou au basson, le débat sur cette position a traversé les siècles. L’intérêt du présent enregistrement est d’argumenter sur pièces le choix de Sebastiani. Pour cela l’excellent Aldo Botta, intelligemment secondé par le pianiste Giuseppe Galiano, a pioché dans les partitions manuscrites de Sebastiani, pour la plupart inédites, et rassemblé un florilège de fantaisies sur des airs d’opéras bien connus de Bellini, Verdi et Rossini. La Somnambule, le Trouvère, Norma et Sémiramide, offrent ainsi la possibilité à la clarinette de rivaliser avec les acrobaties belcantistes pour le plus grand plaisir d’interprètes virtuoses et d’auditeurs enclins aux joies faciles de mélodies bien connues, revisitées avec brio par un compositeur certes oublié mais grand maître lui-même de son instrument. On ne découvrira pas là des merveilles injustement négligées mais on appréciera le rai de lumière que ces œuvres jettent sur une période qui offrait aux grandes machines opératiques la possibilité d’entrer dans l’intimités et les limites du salon. This inexhaustible desire is counterbalanced by the other “case” represented by the nascent idolatry for instrument virtuosos who build around themselves a legendary aura - very closed to the configuration of the romantic hero with a fascinating and mysterious biography - and an adequate literature to inflame the delirious audiences. The relapse of similar “obsessions” has an extraordinary confirmation in the salon and academic consumption of pages intended to “evoke” the emotions felt in crowded theater halls, a secular celebration is consumed between more or less prestigious salons aimed at the beloved entertainment between the promotion of young talents, noble amateurs, damsels to marry, prestigious guests. The work of Ferdinando Sebastiani, one of the most accredited clarinetist of the nineteenth century and founder of a recognized “school” which enjoyed great prestige in the national and international context, fits into this so articulated landscape. Aldo Botta on the clarinet and Giuseppe Galiano on the piano try their hand at this fascinating challenge in the name of a funambolic virtuosity and a marked theatrical expressiveness.
