Felix Nowowiejski Concertos Pour Piano Et Pour Violoncelle Kortus Koziak Borowicz - Dux1883

Felix Nowowiesjski (1877-1946), de cinq ans l’aîné de Szymanowski et d’un an le cadet de Karlowicz est certainement l’un des compositeurs polonais les moins connus de la première moitié du XXe siècle et pourtant non des moins intéressants, en raison d’une liberté stylistique qui permet de ne le rattacher à aucun groupe, à aucune tendance esthétique clairement identifiés. Comme Stravinsky, de cinq ans son benjamin, Nowowiesjski n’a cessé d’adapter son langage aux urgences des conditions historiques que traversait son pays, et d’innover. Héritier d’une tradition conservatrice, à l’instar de son voisin morave Janácek, il sut découvrir en lui le moderniste qui sommeillait, dont les œuvres ici enregistrées en premières mondiales témoignent avec une force particulière. Fort bien servi par Bartosz Koziak, le Concerto pour violoncelle et orchestre (1938) est une œuvre d’une redoutable virtuosité mais qui intègre celle-ci à un discours alternant la profondeur et la gravité des tutti symphoniques à la légèreté et la grâce des moments où l’orchestration se fait chambriste. On notera que le troisième mouvement de ce concerto, en forme de Passacaille, dispose d’une version alternative plus longue d’une trentaine de mesures, judicieusement enregistrée ici. Le Concerto pour piano (1941), interprété avec fougue par Jacek Kortus, porte la trace dramatique de l’époque qui en vit la composition : la fuite du compositeur à Cracovie, où il vécut caché en dépit de la détérioration de sa santé, pour échapper à une arrestation par la Gestapo. Inscrits dans la lignée formelle d’une œuvre post-romantique, ses trois mouvements offrent au soliste la possibilité d’exploiter complètement la variété des couleurs du piano en contraste avec les timbres variés d’une orchestration luxuriante. Un disque original qui mérite de retenir l’attention d’autant que l’accompagnement orchestral, dirigé par Lukasz Borowicz, offre un écrin soigné à ces œuvres rares. (Jacques-Philippe Saint-Gerand)

The album presents the oeuvre of one of the most interesting Polish composers, whose artistic activity coincided with turbulent historical and ideological changes, but also with stylistic ones, which took place in the first half of the 20th century. Feliks Nowowiejski (1877–1946) is a creator in whose achievements modernist tendencies intersect with echoes of neoromantic style, still strong. A special Slavic idiom was expressed in that music, present both in its programme layer – referring to the history, geography and folklore of Poland and the entire Slavic region – and its extremely songful melodies, which are the composer’s hallmark. The album features two of his works, and it is their world recording premiere. The first is the Piano Concerto in D Minor, Op. 16, also called Slavic (although that name probably does not come from the creator himself), a composition requiring an excellent technique from the pianist due to its virtuoso aspect. The second work is the Cello Concerto, Op. 55; the composition is extensive, broad and rich; in addition, it is one of the few cello concertos created in the interwar period. It is also in that piece that we will hear the ‘Slavic’ singing, which is its definite advantage. The pieces are performed by Jacek Kortus (piano), Bartosz Koziak (cello) and musicians of the Poznan Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Lukasz Borowicz.
