Les Russes et Bach ? Un mystère. Ni Leonid Kogan ni David Oïstrakh ne gravèrent l’intégralité des Sonates et Partitas, seuls les exilés, Nathan Milstein en tête, l’osèrent, et pour Oïstrakh, il s’en sera tenu devant les micros à la seule Première Sonate. Lecture plutôt qu’interprétation, mais dans les termes simplement glorieux de puissance sonore et de pure beauté qui signaient l’art de ses jeunes années : on est en 1947. Aussi exceptionnel que soit ce document bien reporté par Biddulph, il ne fait pas regretter les autres œuvres du cahier, Oïstrakh en restant ensuite au chapitre Bach aux Concertos et aux Sonates avec clavier. La lecture profuse, fantasque, avec l’appoint diabolique du piano d’Alexander Goldenweiser de la Troisième Sonate de Medtner, vaste poème épique à la lyrique prégnante, est mieux connue. Il faut entendre les tempêtes et les méditations qu’échangent ces deux monstres sacrés. Vrai petit trésor du disque, et vraie rareté pour le coup, la Première Sonate un peu Poulenc de Zara Levina, écrite pour Oïstrakh en 1928 de leur temps commun d’Odessa. Quelle jolie partition, et quel beau duo ils forment. Pour elle, pour entendre Oïstrakh si audiblement ému, ce disque est précieux. (Discophilia - Artalinna.com) (Jean-Charles Hoffelé)

This CD contains three rare recordings by the great Soviet violinist David Oistrakh. Not only was he a master interpreter of the classics, Oistrakh was a champion of the violin works by his contemporaries, and his recordings of the compositions by Prokofiev, Khachaturian, Miakovsky, Taneyev and Shostakovich are considered definitive. Curiously, however, Oistrakh’s recording of the Violin Sonata No.3 by Nicolai Medtner has never been reissued commercially on CD. Partnered by the legendary Alexander Goldenweiser (the teacher of Dmitry Kabalevsky, Grigory Ginzberg, Tatiana Nikolayeva, Samuel Feinberg and Lazar Berman), this expansive sonata, which clocks in at 45 minutes, is one of the composer’s most enchanting works. Also featured on this CD is a work by the Crimean composer Zara Levina, who Oistrakh knew from his home town of Odessa. This attractive work, combining modernist and folk-like elements, receives its first digital release on CD. Finally, although he recorded all of J. S. Bach’s concertos and all six violin sonatas with keyboard accompaniment, Oistrakh only committed one of the Leipzig master’s six unaccompanied violin works to disc: the Solo Sonata No.1 in G minor. This recording displays the grandeur and warmth so characteristic of the master Soviet violinist.
