Ecoutez comme Hannes Minnaar prélude à tout le cahier, égrenant ce geste qui semble hésiter, apprivoisant la pure beauté de son Steinway. Ce Moderato qui cherche jusque dans la fugue une direction, c’est Chostakovitch à son piano, improvisant l’alpha d’un cycle qui ira d’émerveillement en terreur, de rêve en cauchemar, tout un monde sonore où la psyché du compositeur s’est enfermée. Bach évidemment reste le modèle, Le Clavier bien tempéré comme le jouait Richter, mystique, secret et pourtant impérieux, mais de ce modèle Hannnes Minnaar ne transfuse rien dans l’opus de Chostakovitch. Il préfère ouvrir grand le kaléidoscope où passent Schubert et Debussy, Moussorgski et Scriabine, allégeant son piano, le colorant à l’infini, le gorgeant de timbres, produisant des fugues d’équilibristes, basses et mediums alertes, aigus de cristal, accords de cloches, si il ne rend pas ici hommage à la science des timbres de Tatiana Nikolayeva ! After Bach's Goldberg Variations, which won him worldwide honours (including a Diapason d'Or), Hannes Minnaar challenges and confronts what has become a 'classic' of the 20th century repertoire: Shostakovich's Preludes and Fugues, composed in 1951.
