 Dans la notice de son disque, Robert King nous convainc aisément que les Sonates en Trio BWV 525-530 que l’on joue habituellement à l’orgue, pouvaient très bien, de par leur aspect à la fois polyphonique et pédagogique, être jouées par un petit ensemble chambriste. Il nous propose ainsi son propre arrangement conçu pour son Consort, à savoir six instruments (violon, alto, hautbois, violoncelle, théorbe), le King tenant la partie d’orgue et de clavecin. De fait la polyphonie complexe de ces partitions qui recyclent nombres d’œuvres antérieures, convient tout à fait à cet étalonnage instrumental. Si l’orgue restitue à merveille la pureté du contrepoint, l’utilisation des instruments à cordes dits "expressifs" et du hautbois ajoute une plus-value dans l’expression du détail, des phrasés, des timbres. Quant au soutien du continuo, il apporte une profondeur harmonique inédite. Le contraste entre les lignes mélodiques et le continuum harmonique renvoie d’ailleurs aux Concertos Brandebourgeois. On pourra ainsi trouver ici le hautbois un peu trop concertant (BWV 527-529), et regretter un continuo et des tempos un peu timorés (BWV526-530). Une fort belle réalisation. (Jérôme Angouillant) Bach’s Six Trio Sonatas, BWV 525-530, were originally written as practice works for his son Wilhelm Friedemann (b.1710) when Wilhelm was learning the organ. Here they are completely reimagined and transformed into colourful, expressive, instrumental chamber works. It was Bach himself who founded the tradition of transcribing his own music for varying instrumental groupings. Robert King has arranged and adapted these six works to involve a wide range of instrumental colours. Five melody instruments (two violins, viola, oboe and oboe d'amore) create a variety of instrumental colours, underpinned by a similarly diverse continuo accompaniment of cello, theorbo, harpsichord and chamber organ. An outstanding group of instrumentalists – Kati Debretzeni and Huw Daniel violins, Rose Redgrave viola and Frances Norbury oboe & oboe d’amore – and an equally fine continuo team (Robin Michael cello, Eligio Quinteiro theorbo, Robert King harpsichord & organ) brings a deliciously intimate and conversational quality to Bach’s music, quite different to that achieved at the organ. Across six varied sonatas, the resultant rich harmonic and instrumental palette presents virtuoso playing that showcases Bach's melodic and harmonic genius. Engineer David Hinitt and the fine acoustic of Alpheton New Maltings create a recording of exceptional clarity and warmth. Extensive presentation includes 32 page booklet with liner note in three languages by Robert King plus four pages of session photos and reproductions of two of Bach’s manuscripts.
