Alessandro Stradella (1644-1682) est un curieux personnage : issu d’une famille noble, orphelin très tôt, petit chanteur dans une maîtrise romaine, puis musicien de Christine de Suède, il mena une vie très mouvementée et fut assassiné à 38 ans… Mais le plus important, n’est-ce pas son œuvre ? On lui doit entre autres six oratorios, de nombreux motets, une messe à 16 voix [jamais donnée de nos jours], une centaine de cantates, qui, tous, connurent un grand succès en leur temps. Les deux cantates présentées dans ce CD sont très différentes l’une de l’autre. La première, Esule dalle sfere, fut composée pour la commémoration des Fidèles Défunts (2 novembre) et fait intervenir Lucifer, les âmes du Purgatoire, et l’archange Gabriel, dans des dialogues hauts en couleurs. La seconde, Chi resiste al Dio bendato, est un éloge de l’amour. Ces deux cantates sont séparées par une Sinfonia pour trompette et cordes du plus bel effet jouée sur une trompette baroque par Enrico Negro. Les interprètes de l’Accademia del Ricercar et leur chef Pietro Busca ont un jeu d’une grande distinction, que ce soit dans les préludes orchestraux ou les quatuors vocaux. The third instalment of the series Glories of the Italian Cantata launched by Elegia Classics examines the production of Alessandro Stradella, an author of great interest, who only the dagger of a murderer prevented him from becoming one of the most famous exponents of European Baroque, thanks to an unusual personality and an ability to create dazzling contrastsof color, comparable to those that he was able to evoke in painting the supreme Caravaggio. In order to highlight the extraordinary eclecticism of this composer, the programme of this disc combines a sacred masterpiece such as Esule dalle sfere, a wide-ranging cantata conceived for the Feast of the Commemoration of the Dead on verses by the Roman poet PompeoFigari, and Chi resiste al dio bendato, an arcadic cantata, which closes with a dragging tarantella. These works and the Sinfonia avanti il barcheggio for natural trumpet are presented in thesplendid interpretation of the period-ensemble Accademia del Ricercare conducted by Pietro Busca and a cast of six singers, among whom stand out the sopranos Lucia Cortese and PaolaValentina Molinari, the baritone Mauro Borgioni and the bass Enrico Bava. An exciting new chapter in the unrecognized repertoire of the Italian Baroque cantata, of which other beautifulvolumes await us in the near future!
