Parmi une trentaine de mélodies avec piano, la soprano Joanna Tylkowska-Drozdz a retenu le recueil de quinze d’entre elles que l’éditeur Ricordi avait regroupé à l’occasion du centenaire de la mort de Bellini en 1935. Ces œuvres ont été écrites par le compositeur à partir de l’âge de 12 ans (La Farfalletta) jusqu’à sa mort. Les six premières sont des complaintes et des ballades qui montrent combien Bellini chantait simplement parce qu’il avait le génie de la mélodie. Dès les romances et ariettes suivantes, tous ceux qui connaissent leur Bellini, retrouveront avec délice, les airs des opéras contemporains de ces mélodies : Norma, Les Capulets et les Montaigus, Les Puritains… Comme souvent avec Bellini, en passant d’une partition à l’autre, on découvre de très nombreuses répétitions et reprises. Mais quel plaisir du Bel canto ! La soprano polonaise chante ces airs avec une grande élégance, même si une pointe de sensualité, comme savait si bien l’exprimer Renata Scotto lorsqu’elle chantait Bellini, aurait été appréciable. La pianiste Olha Bila qui a l’habitude d’accompagner des répétitions d’opéra, a un sens de la nuance et de la finesse qui laisse pleinement le chant s’exprimer. Vincenzo was an Italian opera composer of the Neapolitan school. He studied in Naples with Vincenzo Zingarelli, and acted initially as an instrumental and ecclesiastical composer, but the success of his first operas set him on the path of stage music. Zingarelli shaped in Bellini a love of simple melodies with great expressive power, without artificial artistry or embellishment, in accordance with the principles of the Neapolitan school. Bellini wrote in the belcanto style and was, next to Donizetti, the most important creator of Italian Romantic opera before Verdi. Characteristic of Bellini’s work is a wonderful melodic invention that found favour with Berlioz and Wagner. The performers of the leading parts in Bellini’s operas were the most outstanding singers of his time, including tenor Giovanni Battista Rubini, sopranos Henriette Méric-Lalande, Giuditta Pasta, Giulia Grisi, and mezzo-soprano Giuditta Grisi. Bellini’s work strongly influenced the compositional style of Giuseppe Verdi, who valued truth and the power of declamation in Bellini’s operas. In 1833 Bellini moved to Paris, where he became friends with, among others, Chopin, who was eight years younger. Bellini was buried in Paris’s Père Lachaise cemetery...
