Quatuor Lotus

Sans leur faire une fleur, devant les Lotus, ne restons pas bouche cousue. Cette formation née en 1993 a travaillé avec les Melos, les Amadeus et les Lasalle, excusez du peu. Conjuguant le sérieux allemand à la finesse japonaise, sans chercher l'esbrouffe, ils nous restituent au plus près cette musique sans tapage qui doucement, de préférence sur le mode mineur, s'insinue dans le paysage choisi que va notre charmante sensibilité automnale. Un compositeur qui, dès son premier opus, nous donne ce mélancolique quatuor en do ne saurait être foncièrement mauvais. Vanhal (1739-1813), compositeur prolifique (notamment, près d'une centaine de quatuors), fut très estimé à son époque, et semble jeter un pont entre son maître (dit-on) Dittersdorf (sans oublier Boccherini, qui n'a pas fait que des quintettes !) et la grande geste haydnienne. Musique de chambre sonnant ainsi qu'un élégant autoclassicisme, jusqu'à ce jour peu présente au disque (mais déjà, les Weller...), et dont nous attendons avec impatience de nouvelles découvertes. Du jeune Haydn un peu trop proche parfois du placide divertimento, le premier violon laissant encore bien entendre qu'il est le primus inter pares, avant la grande émancipation polyphonique de toutes les voix égales (et voies royales) possibles du grand quatuor à cordes. One may rightly claim that Johann Baptist Vanhal, who traced his roots to Bohemia, was one of the most productive composers of the eighteenth century. He wrote a total of 1,377 (!) works; sixty string quartets appeared in print through to 1787 (according to the catalogue of his works published by Alexander Weinmann in 1988), and thirty-six others have been transmitted in manuscripts or are documented in catalogue entries. Quantity aside, Vanhal quite early gained fame with the quality of his works. He moved to Vienna in the retinue of Countess Schaffgotsch around 1760 and within only a few years succeeded in establishing himself as one the leading figures in Viennese music life, making a name for himself as a teacher and violinist and later also as a composer. Friedrich Rochlitz, the editor of the Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung of Leipzig, wrote in his Vanhal obituary published in January 1814, "Wanhall was for quite a while, especially until J. Haydn’s and Mozart’s works became more widely disseminated and sank in more deeply, one of the most popular, yes, even one of the most renowned instrumental composers in Germany". The Lotus String Quartet, which gained notice with its triumph at the International Chamber Music Competition in Osaka, Japan, a mere one year after its founding in 1993, interprets a selection of Vanhal’s quartets on cpo. The press has written of its performances: "Japanese perfection, coupled with German depth of feeling"; "Mozart’s quartets with Japanese charm"; and "the metamorphosis of what is naturally beautiful".
