Le 'Cycle français' de cantates sacrées de Telemann a été composé en 1713/14 sur des textes du théologien et poète luthérien orthodoxe Neumeister dans le double cadre des activités du musicien à Francfort et d'une commande de la cour ducale d'Eisenach. L'orchestre de ladite cour étant structurellement et musicalement orienté vers le style français, les partitions de ces cantates font fi par exemple de l'austérité traditionnelle du temps de l'Avent en usant notamment de danses et de soli de nature opératique cependant que bien d'autres usages français se rencontrent dans l'instrumentation tel l'emploi du hautbois et du basson suivant la pratique versaillaise aux alentours de 1680. Les deux cds ici proposés constituent le volume 4 de l'intégrale du 'Cycle français' de cantates. Le premier est consacré aux quatre dimanches de l'Avent et à la fête de l'Annonciation; le second aux 6ème, 7ème, 8ème, 9ème et 10ème dimanches après la Trinité. Les solistes vocaux, à l'exception de la basse, varient d'un cd à l'autre. Sous la direction de Felix Koch, les 'Gutenberg Soloists' et le 'Neumeyer Consort' prouvent qu'il n'est nul besoin d'austérité compassée pour entraîner les fidèles. Instructing and educating Christians on the one hand and delighting their minds on the other, so that the words and truths of the Holy Scripture would be anchored deeply within them – this was the purpose of the sacred cantata. No master of the Baroque era wrote more of these than Georg Philipp Telemann. He approached this seemingly ‘tedious work’ with such incredible imagination that his congregations could never be bored. One need only listen to the so-called French Cycle (1713-14). To this end, Vol. 4 contributes ten more first recordings. There are certainly meditative moments in both the music for Advent presented here and the cantatas written for the ’normal’ Sundays of the church year; but these works predominantly feature colourful, enormously picturesque music throughout. They always get straight to the heart of the worship service's message and are still instantly appealing today.
