Poussée par Dimitri Chostakovitch (elle étudie la composition à Moscou avec un de ses élèves – et découvre à cette occasion les techniques d’écriture occidentales modernes), Sofia Goubaidoulina (1931-) persévère, contre vents (les interdictions de représentation) et marées (la doctrine du réalisme socialiste), dans la création d’une nouvelle musique soviétique – au même titre que ses compatriotes Edison Denisov ou Alfred Schnitkkte –, jusqu’à la reconnaissance hors des frontières, le 30 mai 1981 à Vienne, lorsque le violoniste Gidon Kremer joue pour la première fois son concerto pour violon et orchestre Offertorium (elle émigre dix ans plus tard en Allemagne). C’est du même élan que date "Rejoice!", sonate en cinq mouvements (un parallèle avec les différentes parties de la messe latine), une œuvre dont la référence directe à la religion retarde la création jusqu’en 1988, alors que le Triple Concerto naît 36 ans plus tard, pour violon, violoncelle et bayan (cet accordéon chromatique du 20ème siècle auquel la compositrice façonne une place dans la musique contemporaine) : délicat, intrigant et entrelacé (trois solistes, trois voix, des triades, des tierces), la pièce est basée – mais à distance, respectueuse et libératrice – sur le Triple Concerto de Beethoven (le piano ici remplacé par le bayan). One special aspect of Sofia Gubaidulina’s music is that at the end of the 1970s she discovered the sound characteristics and expressive possibilities of the bayan, a button accordion that had previously been popular only as a folk music instrument in Russia; she then established it as an instrument of contemporary music through numerous inspired compositions. She was supported and accompanied in this endeavour by bayan performers such as Friedrich Lips in Moscow and the Swiss musician Elsbeth Moser, who taught in Hanover. The creation of the Triple Concerto for violin, cello and bayan can be traced back to a suggestion by Elsbeth Moser. For the five movements of the sonata Rejoice! for violin and cello (1981), Gubaidulina chose various quotations from the writings of the Ukrainian ‘travelling philosopher’ Grigori Skoworoda (1722–1794), who called for poverty and self-deepening as a prerequisite for finding God. The composer explained: “The theme of my work is the metaphorical representation of the transition to another reality, expressed through the juxtaposition of normal sound and harmonics.” Due to its clear religious references, it was not possible to premiere the work until 1988, in Finland.
