Les circonstances de la création sont en soi un sujet d’opérette : découvrez-en les détails dans l’excellent livret de présentation. Demi-échec de la création berlinoise, puis triomphe à Vienne. Une Nuit à Venise est aujourd’hui encore l’opérette de Johann Strauss la plus appréciée, juste après son insurpassable Chauve-Souris. Dans les années 20, la direction du Theater an der Wien voulait une programmation qui fédère les tenants de la tradition et les amateurs de contemporain. Korngold venait de triompher avec la Ville Morte, il lui fut demandé de réaliser un arrangement de cette Nuit à Venise. Le prodige viennois remania l’orchestration, remplaça certains numéros qu’il jugeait faibles par d’autres pièces de Strauss, réattribua certains arias. Triomphe. C’est cette version que nous entendons ici. Par le soyeux de ses cordes, la Philharmonie de Graz a peu à envier à son homologue viennoise. Markus Burkert, grand défenseur de ce répertoire, déchaîne l’énergie de cette comédie des erreurs, au diapason d’une distribution impliquée et sans faiblesses. Mention spéciale pour Alexander Geller : la splendeur de son timbre melliflu, qui fait merveille dans la Valse de la Lagune, son élégance, son style en font un Caramello qui convoque les mânes de Wunderlich. De ce magnifique disque émane une lumière… méditerranéenne ! (Olivier Gutierrez)

Erich Wolfgang Korngold greatly revised the comic operetta A Night in Venice by Johann Strauss (Jr.) on the basis of the libretto version by Ernst Marischka. The original Straussian version initially rapidly made its way around the world, with performances in the lands of the Danube monarchy as well as in Hamburg, Munich, and London and even in New York. Nevertheless, until the end of World War I it experienced only about five hundred performances, which means that it was clearly overshadowed by Die Fledermaus. Again and again the attempt was made to reinterpret the text with interventions revising its content. Erich Wolfgang Korngold took an additional step in 1923, when he not only adapted the text but also changed the original instrumentation and integrated inserts into the work from other operettas by Strauss, for example, from Simplicius (1880). For several reasons Korngold’s revised version was a success when it was performed at the Theater an der Wien on 25 October 1923: the stage set was lavish and magnificent, the new orchestration displayed tonal sophistication, and the great Richard Tauber was heard in the role of the Duke in quest of erotic adventures. A few years later Korngold’s version made its way to the stage of the Vienna State Opera.
