Johann Gottlieb Graun Cantates - Concerto Pour Viole De Gambe Forsythe Opera Prima Contadin

Au milieu du 18ème siècle la viole de gambe était un instrument largement sur le déclin, mais pas pour l’un des indissociables frères Graun : Johann Gottlieb. La notice rappelle d’ailleurs que sur les 11 concertos « italiens » pour gambe et orchestre répertoriés, 10 sont de sa plume ! Voici une superbe occasion de retrouver la finesse de son art, parfaitement adaptée à la noblesse de l’instrument : comme instrument obbligato dans deux cantates profanes et en soliste dans un concerto encore très vivaldien. Les cantates, dans le style de Scarlatti, donnent l’occasion à Amanda Forsythe (la complice de P. Jaroussky pour son Orphée de Gluck) d’explorer tous les affects en démontrant amplement ses qualités rhétoriques et vocales. Quel timbre, mais quelle prise de son fatigante à la longue avec ses aigus surexposés et cinglants ! La viole douce et très fruitée de Contadin offre un contraste saisissant avec ces décharges de sentiments culminant comme il se doit dans un « Va, ma conserva i miei » volcanique qui ne peut laisser indifférent. Le concerto, au milieu de tant d’ardeur, est comme un îlot de calme bien que l’interprète s’escrime face à des difficultés techniques redoutables… car Graun, ici, ne l’épargne pas. Contadin affiche une maîtrise sereine qui impressionne, et instaure un vrai dialogue avec l’ensemble qu’il a créé dans le but de lui servir d’écrin. Un disque remarquable. (Olivier Eterradossi)

Of all the composers who wrote for the gamba during his times, Johann Gottlieb Graun must have been the most diligent one, even though he was not a virtuoso on this instrument. The twenty-seven works by him that are known to us represent significant contributions to the repertoire of the concerto, cantata, and sonata. All three of the works presented here contain grand solo parts for the viola da gamba that prove to be of the highest virtuosity. Graun evidently was interested in putting a virtuoso to the test. And the Italian gambist Cristiano Contadin, the founder of the Opera Prima ensemble, lives up to his reputation (as certified by the Musica magazine and other sources) as a first-class artist whose delightful delineation of tone and flawless style reveal a complete command of his instrument. The two sacred cantatas were composed in the Italian style on the basis of texts by Pietro Metastasio, the most famous librettist and poet of his times. They are sung by the American soprano Amanda Forsythe, who has won admiration especially for her interpretations of Baroque music – and is known from our cpo CDs with the Boston Early Music Festival.
