Girolami Frescobaldi (1583-1643) occupe une place centrale dans l'évolution du style de la musique dans la première moitié du dix-septième siècle. Sa musique pour clavier qui se caractérise par son audace contrapuntique et sa virtuosité préfigure le fameux stylus phantasticus allemand, repris notamment par Froberger, son élève, et décrit en ces termes par Athanasius Kircher (1650) « C'est la plus libre et la moins contraignante des méthodes de composition, clavecins et orgues sont les instruments idéals pour ce modus componendi car l'interprète peut ainsi montrer l'étendue de son talent de virtuose. ». Parmi les nombreux recueils pour clavier du compositeur, l'organiste Ivana Valotti nous livre quelques pièces inédites appartenant à ces « Chigi Codice » Q VI 25-29 exhumés en 2017. Hormis quelques pièces isolées basées sur des thèmes populaires (Partite sopra di Fiorenza, Capriccio fata sopra il cuccu) on retrouve dans cette succession de Toccatas, Ricercari et Canzone l'absence de fil mélodique, l'invention et la virtuosité caractéristiques de ce style libre et improvisé, ici brillamment défendu par l'interprète sur l'orgue Antegnati (1565) de Mantoue. After the publication of the complete keyboard works within the tc.580600 box set, with this album Tactus begins theworld premiere of the Frescobaldi unpublishedmanuscripts,whose attribution has finally come to an end after years of work by Constance Frei and Etienne Darbellay, the most accredited musicologist in the studies concerning the great composer from Ferrara, and curator of the most important printed edition ever made of his keyboard works. Ivana Valotti, at the Antegnati 1565 organ in the Palatine Basilica of Santa Barbara in Mantua, performs a variegated anthology of toccatas, canzonas, and ricercars. The music is taken from the Chigi codices, a seventeenth-century collection of vocal scores and keyboard manuscripts collected by the Chigi family, which has in its leading exponents Fabio Chigi (alias Pope Alexander vi) and his nephew Flavio (cardinal), donated to the Vatican Apostolic Library by the Italian state in 1924.
