 Grâce à quelques enregistrements inédits (le portrait du Palazetto Bru Zane notamment) l’œuvre du compositeur Fernand de La Tombelle (1854-1928) est l'objet d'une redécouverte récente. Homme d'une grande culture et touche-à-tout (son catalogue comprend écrits théoriques ou littéraires, dessins et peintures), La Tombelle fut élève de Théodore Dubois et d'Alexandre Guilmant avant de fonder avec Charles Bordes et d'Indy, la Schola Cantorum. Sans jamais être organiste titulaire, il fréquenta régulièrement les orgues de la capitale (notamment ceux de La Madeleine et de La Trinité) et nous laisse un solide corpus d'orgue qu'Acte Préalable documente ici dans ce premier volume avec la qualité et le soin qui font tout l'intérêt de ce label. Cette première livraison de musique d'orgue inédite au disque est la plupart du temps dédiée aux maîtres de l'époque : Gigout, Dubois, Saint-Saëns ou Franck qui constituaient l'entourage du compositeur à Paris. On décèle ainsi des emprunts ou des hommages à ces derniers (Guilmant pour son Opus 23 ou Dubois pour sa Toccata et sa Sonate). Cela dit la musique de La Tombelle regorge de belles surprises. Hormis le recueil de pièces d'orgue Op.23 qui fait l'essentiel du programme et la Sonate déjà cités, les deux Offertoires librement improvisés, l’élégante Toccata en Fa et la petite Marche Nuptiale dédiée à Ambroise Thomas constituent d'excellents compléments. Without a doubt, one of them is Baron Fernand de La Tombelle, whose album with his organ works we deliver to the hands of music enthusiasts. He was born in Paris. He studied with Félix-Alexandre Guilmant and Théodor Dubois. When absent, he often replaced the organists at the La Trinité and La Madeleine churches. In 1896, together with Charles Bordes, Vincent d’Indy and Alexander Guilmant he created the Schola Cantorum. Independent and with a strong character, Fernand de La Tombelle deserves to be saved from oblivion, not only because of his works, but also due to his social and artistic activity. Apart from his musical interest, he was also fascinated by folklore, sculpting, poetry, painting, cycling, cuisine, astronomy and archaeology. His compositional catalogue covers nearly all genres: songs, chamber music, organ pieces, sacral and secular works, choral pieces, orchestral and piano works, stage and occasional music. When analysing the organ works of La Tombelle, we should pay close attention to the clarity of form and musical ideas, which he derived from his study of the works of Guilmant, Dubois and Saint-Saëns. ..
