Giovanni Maria Pelazza 12 Sonates Pour Orgue Bergamini - Tc841601 - Tactus - Classical

Né dans la province de Turin en 1847, le compositeur organiste italien Giovanni Maria Pelazza étudie l'harmonie et la composition auprès de Giovanni Cagliero dans la capitale du Piémont. Organiste titulaire, il fréquente Verdi, Puccini et son confrère Lorenzo Perosi, voyage en France où il se lie d'amitié avec Saint-Saëns, puis finit ses jours à Buenos Aires en 1936. Ses douze sonates « sui vari tuoni » qui faisaient déjà l'objet de l'album plus complet de Fabio Macera sur un orgue Cerassi assez spectaculaire (Brillant), sont caractérisées par un respect de la forme traditionnelle (le contrepoint hérité de Cagliero) et l'influence prégnante de l'opéra. Un style « Bel Canto » volontiers théâtral issu de l'école d'orgue italienne de l'époque représentée par Bossi, Morandi et Petrali tout en évoquant par petites touches le cécilianisme naissant (Les deux brefs Adagios) introduit auparavant par Perosi à Saint Marc. Aux claviers de l'emblématique orgue Bossi turinois construit en 1890, Bruno Bergamini a laissé ses gants au vestiaire. L'aspect symphonique parfois pompeux (Allegro Sinfonico) et grandiloquent (Suonata Caratteristica) est renforcé ici par un arsenal de jeux de foire (soufflets, canards et cloches), quant au versant opératique bien présent dans les Marches d'ouverture et de final, il faut bien constater qu'il est hélas dénué de tout cantabile. Cerise sur le gâteau, la prise de son nous fait entendre les tirants et le pédalier. Pour thuriféraires uniquement ! (Jérôme Angouillant)

Giovanni Battista Maria Pelazza was born on the 24th of May, 1947 in Carmagnola (Turin). He studied at the Salesian Institute of Turin with Mons. Giovanni Cagliero (well versed musician and collaborator of S. Giovanni Bosco). Pelazza’s family first moved to Turin, then to France and eventually settled in Buenos Aires where Giovanni Battista died in 1936. He was close friend with Camille Saint-Saëns, Giuseppe Verdi, Giacomo Puccini and Lorenzo Perosi. The following information is the survey of this interesting and original composer and organist whose life and work we still know little of. The organist Bruno Bergamini, also curator of the printed work of these compositions, makes use of the grandiose organ of the church of San Gaetano in Romano Canavese, built in 1890 by the famous organ workshop Carlo Vegezzi Bossi, for which Pelazza contributed to the inauguration of a prestigious instrument in the church of San Giovanni Evangelista in Buenos Aires. The synthesis of a theatrical style less and less influential with the echoes of the new music for dance from Vienna and Paris, make in these sonatas an original compendium of the last offshoots of that type of liturgical music that in those days was succumbing to the inexorable arrival of Cecilianism, that will bring back a somehow severe style in the sacred and liturgical compositions.
