 Sur son élégante pochette trois volets, le label Stradivarius nous invite à admirer le magnifique orgue Dell’Orto e Lanzini de l’enregistrement. Son contenu retrace en 2 CD des pièces de Tunder, prémices des grandes œuvres pour orgue, que Buxtehude, son gendre, et plus tard Bach, porteront à leur apogée. Formé à Rome auprès de Frescobaldi, Tunder est nommé titulaire à l’orgue de l’église Sainte-Marie de Lübeck où il passera le reste de sa vie. Important représentant de l’école d’orgue d’Allemagne du nord, il y développe les célèbres Abendmusiker (concerts du soir) installant l’orgue comme instrument de concert à part entière et développant profondément la technique de jeu et l’exploitation complète des registres. Son œuvre n’a pas été publiée de son vivant, mais il sera le premier à utiliser la toccata dans sa fonction de prélude à une fugue. Les pièces présentées ici font appel à une connaissance savante de l’instrument et à une grande pratique du pédalier. L’organiste italien Manuel Tomadin, multiple lauréat de concours internationaux et titré organiste européen en 2012, démontre une impressionnante maîtrise et une rigueur musicale en parfait accord avec ces œuvres complexes, riches et méditatives. (Philippe Zanoly) Franz Tunder was a German composer and organist, an important link between the first German baroque style, which was based on Venetian models, and the baroque style that culminated later in the organ music of J. S. Bach and in the development of the chorale Cantata. According to a recent research, Tunder was born in Lübeck in 1614, and not in Bannesdorf or Burg on Fehmarn Island, as it was believed until not too long ago. He received his first music lessons from his father Hans Tunder and from the Cantor Christian Prusse in the local parish church. Little is known about his life, but it is known that his talent was adequate enough to enable him to be appointed as organist at the court of Frederick III, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp in Gottorf, in Schleswig, at the age of 18. Having interest in the organ work of Franz Tunder, whose organ repertoire got to us only in partial form (1957 Adam Sutkowski), means focusing the attention on an important figure in the production and evolution of the organ forms of the northern Germany school, this last heavily devoted to the tradition and style represented by the production of the Italian Girolamo Frescobaldi.
