The 123 years after the partitions of Poland was a trying time for the Polish people. The loss of independence made it so our society was forced to focus on the most important task – which aside from fulfilling their basic needs – became the sustaining and preservation of our national identity. This second task was the duty of parents, teachers but above all people from the art industry. Literature, painting as well as our music from that period, contained a condensed patriotic message, which was unseen before or after in Polish art. Between the 18th and 19th century, the organizers and consumers of music were the aristocratic houses. These houses, such as Czartoryski, Radziwill or Oginski, maintained in their manors not only orchestras but also entire opera ensembles. Many of them were talented singers, instrumentalists or composers. Following in their footsteps were the middle and lower classes of nobility. Noble courts usually possessed a piano and their inhabitants actively practiced music, be it for personal reasons or for social visits. A perfect example of that were the houses of Szymanowski in Tymoszówka or Karlowicz in Wiszniewo, and the title of the following publication, At the old manor house, is both accurate and justified.
