Anton Rubinstein Concerto pour piano n 4 - Caprice Russe Shelest Järvi - SCCD013

Paradoxe, celui qui fut le plus connu et le plus joué des concertos de Rubinstein avant de tomber peu à peu dans l’oubli s’avère le moins bien servi dans l’intégrale d’Anna Shelest et Neeme Järvi. La faute en incombe à un orchestre de jeunes musiciens fondé par Leon Botstein en 2015 et baptisé TON « The orchestra NOW ». Malgré son titre un peu ronflant, cette phalange reste d’un niveau assez limité et ses solistes parfois peu assurés, malgré la direction toujours tirée au cordeau de Neeme Järvi. On déplore aussi puisqu’il s’agit d’un enregistrement public une assistance indécemment bruyante dont les toux viennent gâcher la conclusion du bel andante. Le complément d’un Caprice Russe pour piano et orchestre digne de se comparer à la fantaisie hongroise de Liszt et qui anticipe nettement sur Rachmaninov ne suffit pas à compenser ces lacunes. Les quatre autres concertos ont bénéficié de l’orchestre national estonien ; pour quoi n’a-t-il pas été mis à contribution également pour ce CD ? Au demeurant, pour qui veut une intégrale homogène et portée par l’excellente Anna Shelest, ce CD complète un ensemble recommandable pour sa globalité. (Richard Wander)

It is difficult to overstate the breadth of contribution of Anton Rubinstein to the development of the Russian culture in the 19th century. His multifaceted genius can be divided into three areas- Rubinstein the composer, the pianist, and the educator. In this first release in the series of recordings of his works for piano and orchestra, we focus on Rubinsteins role as an educator. Born in Ukraine, she began her studies at the age of six, and at the age of eleven she performed at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. Her repertoire ranges from the Baroque to todays contemporary composers. She has a particular affinity for Russian piano literature. Having received her Masters Degree at The Juilliard School, Anna Shelest currently resides in New York City with her husband and two sons.
