On doit en convenir, l’argument d’un Bal masqué, composé dans les années qui virent également l’éclosion de Tristan comme d’Orphée aux enfers, n’est pas des plus pénétrant, ne serait-ce que du fait du poids de la censure sur le livret. Mais, prenons-le pour ce qu’il est avant tout dans l’esprit du compositeur, à savoir un prétexte à la musique et en particulier au chant, naviguant nécessairement entre les genres. A cet égard, le mélomane sera servi par cette belle captation live à l’Opéra de Vienne, en avril 2016, sous la baguette de Jesus Lopez Cobos. C’est bien à une célébration musicale qu’il sera avant tout convié, grâce à un plateau de choix où brillent évidemment Piotr Beczala et Krassimira Stoyanova, mais où l’on se réjouira pareillement de retrouver le grand Dmitri Hvorostovsky, alors qu’un répit lui permettait enfin de reprendre la scène, peu avant que la maladie n’ait le dernier mot. On sera tout autant impressionné par l’Ulrica de Nadia Krasteva, inquiétante à souhait, et enchanté par l’Oscar de Hila Fahima. Le public participe évidemment à cette célébration par ses applaudissements de plus en plus nourris et tellement mérités. (Alain Monnier)

Composed for the 1857–58 Carnival Season at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera tells of the assassination of Sweden’s King Gustav III. It was rejected by the Neapolitan censors, and so were its revisions. The opera’s first performance eventually took place on 17 February 1859 at the Teatro Apollo in Rome, but only after revisions demanded by the pontifical censors had been made. The setting was transferred from Sweden to colonial North America; and Riccardo, the governor of Boston, was to be the murder victim. Despite these changes, Un ballo in maschera was very well received by the audience, and it remains one of Verdi’s most popular stage works.Like most modern performances, this recording is based on the Swedish version of the opera. Its first performance at the Vienna Opera House on the Ring was given in 1870 (exactly one year after the building’s opening) and has since enjoyed well over 500 performances in this house. The star-studded cast includes Pjotr Beczala (Gustav III), Dmitry Hvorostovky (Renato), Krassimira Stoyanova (Emilia), Nadja Krasteva, Hila Fahima, Alexandru Moisiuc, Sorin Coliban, Igor Onishchenko and Thomas Ebenstein.
