Les voix de la soprano Dorothee Mields et du ténor Jan Kobow dialoguent en contrepoint avec une viole ténor et une viole basse, sous la direction, depuis son luth, d'Andreas Arend : Et voilà que ressuscite, pour le plus grand plaisir de nos oreilles, la seule partition qui nous soit parvenue d'un compositeur oublié de l'Allemagne du XVIème siècle, le livre de tablature pour luth allemand de Sebastian Ochsenkun, publié à Heidelberg en 1558. Que sait-on d'Ochsenkun ? Peu de chose : Qu'il est né à Nuremberg en 1521, d'un père barbier et luthier ; qu'il jouait du luth pour le comte palatin Ottheinrich zu Pfalz-Neuburg qui, gagné aux idées de Luther, deviendra prince électeur du Palatinat ; que ce dernier l'engagera comme maître de luth ; et qu'il est mort à Nuremberg en 1574. La tablature pour luth est le système de notation qui permet de transcrire pour ce seul instrument des compositions originellement destinées à plusieurs voix. La performance d'Ochsenkun est d'avoir su retranscrire pour son luth des compositions pour quatre, cinq, six voix tout en en conservant les couleurs. Ces pièces révèlent une excellente capacité d'adaptation et un grand esprit inventif dans l'ornementation. On trouve dans ce recueil des chansons allemandes d'Ochsenkun lui-même, mais aussi de Caspar Glanner(1515-1577), Caspar Otmair (1515-1553), Gregor Petschin(1500-1547) Steffan Mahu (1485-1541),Steffan Zirler (1518-1568), et aussi des motets en latin et des chansons italiennes et françaises de Nicolas Gombert (1495-1560), Thomas Créquillon (1507-1557), Jean Mouton (1459-1522 )et surtout de Josquin DesPrez (1452-1521), très apprécié de Luther . Ce qui aurait pu n'être qu’une heureuse redécouverte musicologique se révèle, à l'écoute, un recueil plein du charme de courtes et belles œuvres de la Renaissance européenne. Laissez-vous séduire par cette « Alchimie des sons », par la belle sérénité de la musique d'Ochsenkun, servie par de tels interprètes. (Marc Galand)

Sebastian Ochsenkun’s Tabulaturbuch auf die Lauten consisting of Latin motets (premiere recordings!), German psalms and songs, and Italian and French pieces was published in 1558 as a collection of contemporary vocal music arranged for the lute. As far as the placement of the music in the collection and quantitative factors are concerned, Josquin des Préz is the most prominently represented composer. In addition, pieces by other renowned composers such as Nicolas Gombert from the Spanish court of Emperor Charles V and Ioannes Mouton from the court of King Francis I of France can be heard on this recording. Ochsenkun was the lutenist of Prince Elector Ottheinrich of the Palatinate. Rising to what was a technically challenging task, he always produced the complete texture for his instrument by transcribing all the voices into lute tablature. His intabulations stand out from those of his contemporaries, who often limited themselves to three voices and sometimes to two. Nevertheless, Ochsenkun’s intabulations are excellently suited for »having a voice sing to them« – which will be demonstrated on this recording, also with several voices and in outstanding interpretations by the renowned singers Dorothee Mields and Jan Kobow. Viewed historically, Ochsenkun’s work is regarded as testimony to the high level of music and lute playing during the middle years of the sixteenth century, also in Southern Germany. It shows us a musician who with his aspiration to quality and system is able to offer far-reaching impulses even beyond his times and his instrument.
