Miguel del Barco Diaz, orgue

Sebastian Aguilera de Heredia (1561-1627) est, avec Cabezón et Correa de Arauxo, l’une des trois grandes figures de l’orgue de la fin de la Renaissance espagnole et du début du XVII° s. C’est à l’orgue de la Seo (cathédrale) de Saragosse qu’il s’illustra. Son domaine de prédilection est celui de la basse de jeu d’anche, ce qui laisse supposer qu’il avait une main gauche particulièrement agile. Il utilise parfois des thèmes bien connus comme le Salve Regina et le Pange lingua. Certaines pages, comme le Tiento du 4° ton, est d’envergure (près de 8’). L’organiste Miguel del Barco Días a choisi de jouer ces oeuvres sur un orgue du temps d’Aguilera de Heredia (puisque, de celui de la Seo, ne subsiste malheureusement de nos jours aucun jeu ancien) : celui de Santa María de la Consolación de Garrovillas de Alconétar (Cáceres), à un seul clavier à registres coupés en basses et dessus. Il en tire le meilleur parti, et son jeu est fort vivant. Un seul petit regret : qu’on n’ait pas pensé à accorder cet instrument historique très intéressant (certains tuyaux « vrillent »). Mais comme ce compositeur est très peu enregistré, on ne fera pas la fine bouche ou plutôt... la fine oreille ! Et comme, de plus, ce CD est vendu à petit prix, on n’hésitera pas à l’acquérir. Despite only his book of ‘Magnificats’ and these 18 compositions for organ having come down to us today, Sebastia´n Aguilera de Heredia (1561–1627) is noted in the history of Spanish music as one of the great figures in the transition from the Renaissance to the Baroque, comparable to his Dutch contemporary Sweelinck. His style reflects the polyphonic tradition of the Spanish Renaissance along with the elements of an incipient Baroque, bridging that of Cabezo´n (Renaissance) and Correa (Baroque). Unlike Italian composers (Frescobaldi in particular) whose music broke substantially with the aesthetics of the Renaissance, paving the way for the composers of Central and Northern Europe, the transition of Spanish organists to the new style was a gradual one. They continued to base compositions on the Renaissance tradition of four-voice vocal polyphony and counterpoint, yet began to elevate one soloistic voice above others serving as something akin to Baroque basso continuo. Aguilera’s compositions display a style uniting the counterpoint, elegance and seriousness of vocal polyphony, a genre in which he was an accomplished master, with music that is more aligned with popular tastes and with dance, achieving an astounding result: works full of life, capable of conveying passions and affects, yet clearer and more comprehensible to the ears and tastes of all.
