Au superbe triptyque du Royal Opera House de Londres (DVD Opus Arte 2011) s’ajoute aujourd’hui celui de Salzbourg (2022) qu’illumine Asmik Grigorian. Christof Loy a eu l’idée lumineuse de modifier l’ordre des trois œuvres que lie le thème de la mort : mort naturelle, assassinat, communion dans la mort. Ainsi se succèdent « Gianni Schicchi », « Il Tabarro » et « Suor Angelica ». Ce déroulement magnifie la progression émotionnelle dans une mise en scène expressionniste réussie. Parfois débordant dans les moments forts, l’orchestre dévoile toute la limpidité mélodique et le raffinement de l’écriture puccinienne. Misha Kiria est un Gianni Schicchi parfait, Roman Burdenko campe un grand Michele, les jeunes ténors Alexey Neklyudov et Dean Power brillent, Joshua Guerrero enchante par son lyrisme, Karita Mattila impressionne par sa dureté. Et puis, il y a Asmik Grigorian prodigieuse d’aisance vocale et de présence scénique dans les rôles de Lauretta, Giorgetta et Angelica. Son « O mio babbino caro » est un bijou de tendresse. Dans « Il Tabarro », elle n’est que lassitude et désespoir. L’apothéose viendra avec « Suor Angelica » dans le face à face d’une violence rare avec une Karita Mattila implacable. Sa bouleversante supplique « Senza mamma » et la scène du miracle portent l’œuvre au sommet de l’émotion lyrique. Inoubliable ! (Gérard Martin)

Il trittico was premiered in New York on 14 December 1918, composed while the First World War was still raging in Europe. At first glance, the three one-act operas Gianni Schicchi, Il tabarro and Suor Angelica seem to have no connection with each other; their common denominator is solely the entanglement of man in a fateful destiny that only exceptionally, for a moment, seems to promise a happy outcome to the “adventure of life” - a set of themes that in its complexity seems to be in such good hands with few directors as with Christof Loy. The main female roles in the three opera acts are performed by the Lithuanian soprano Asmik Grigorian, a very rare and tremendous feat, but once again connects the works to each other.
