Philippe Manoury (1952-) clôture, avec Lab.Oratorium, sa trilogie – dont les premiers tomes sont "Ring" en 2016 et "In Situ" en 2017 –, écrite pour l’Orchestre Güzernich de Cologne et, en collaboration avec son chef Nicolas Stermann, renouvelle le format concert (l’orchestre est pour lui un laboratoire d’expérimentation) en mélangeant les codes du théâtre et de l’oratorio, dans une composition spatialisée et assistée d’électronique en temps réel – technique dont il est un des pionniers. Le compositeur dénonce ici, prenant appui sur les textes de Georg Trakl, Ingeborg Bachmann et Hannah Arendt, la mort par noyade de centaines de migrants lors de la traversée de la Méditerranée, marquée du refus d’accoster de certaines autorités portuaires, en même temps que de l’affirmation, humaniste autant qu’optimiste, d’Angela Merkel répétant son – depuis célèbre – "Wir schaffen das". Au long de cette trilogie spatialisée, Manoury remet en cause l’organisation hiérarchique du concert, héritée de l’esthétique classique et romantique et basée sur l’ordre social de l’époque et tente de placer l’auditeur au centre du dispositif, plutôt qu’en sa périphérie. Philippe Manoury is one of the most prominent compositional voices in France today, and this WERGO recording of his “Lab.Oratorium” presents one of Manoury’s most significant works. Not only is the piece a fascinating exploration of sound color with more than 250 performers, it was inspired by the innovative architecture of many new concert halls (such as Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie with its evocation of ships and the sea). And perhaps most importantly, the work deals with themes that are urgently relevant in our troubled times. Working together with director Nicolas Stemann, Manoury composed the piece for Cologne’s Gürzenich Orchestra as a completely new kind of concert experience, a Gesamtkunstwerk combining theater, oratorio, live electronics, and spatial composition. “Lab.Oratorium” was conceived as an independent work, but it also marks the high point and conclusion of a trilogy of monumental spatial works for orchestra including the prize-winning compositions “In Situ” and “Ring”. “Lab.Oratorium” is Manoury’s moving artistic response to one of the worst humanitarian catastrophes of our time: the drowning deaths of countless refugees in the Mediterranean Sea. The idea of a modern “Odyssey” is made heartbreakingly clear through conversations with members of maritime rescue teams. Sabine Grenard (SOS Me´diterrane´e) collected eyewitness reports that were integrated into the work. This WERGO recording is the premiere recording of a stirring work whose expressivity never succumbs to sentimentality.
